This thesis explores the important role of vitamins, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants in ocular health and disease, focusing specifically on ocular surface disorders, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. Through a comprehensive literature review of 349 articles, 87 of which were reviewed in full, 47 studies were included in this analysis. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses flow diagram was used to ensure rigor and transparency.
Research suggests that omega-3 fatty acid supplementation can alleviate dry eye symptoms by reducing corneal staining and increasing tear breakup time and Schirmer test values. Vitamin A supplementation may improve tear farming and osmolarity in dry eye patients. Vitamin B12 and antioxidant supplements may improve objective parameters in severe dry eye disease, while vitamin D supplementation may improve various symptoms in patients who are deficient and unresponsive to conventional treatment. Vitamin C supplementation may lower the odds of glaucoma prevalence, while increased intake of niacin and riboflavin may decrease the risk of glaucoma. Furthermore, a combination of forskolin, homotaurine, carnosine, folic acid, and several vitamins including B1, B2, and B6, along with magnesium, can reduce intraocular pressure and improve foveal sensitivity in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. Antioxidant and zinc supplementation in the original Age-Related Eye Disease Study formula may reduce the likelihood of advanced Age-related macular degeneration, whereas the updated Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 formula replaced beta-carotene with lutein/zeaxanthin due to the risk of lung cancer in former smokers. Overall, the use of oral supplements containing vitamins A, C, and E, along with omega-3 fatty acids, has been found to be effective in alleviating the symptoms of dry eye disease, reducing the risk of developing glaucoma, and preventing or managing age-related macular degeneration. These findings demonstrate the importance of maintaining proper nutrition to support ocular health and the potential role of nutritional interventions in the management of ocular diseases.
