Allan Jose. Tarptautinių slaugos studentų patirtis, kaip kalbos mokėjimas veikia pacientų priežiūrą klinikinėje praktikoje. Bakalauro darbas. Vadovė – doc. Lina Spirgienė. Lietuvos sveikatos mokslų universitetas, Medicinos akademija, Slaugos fakultetas, Slaugos katedra, Kaunas, 2026.
Allan Jose. International nursing students' experiences of how language proficiency influences patient care in clinical practice. Bachelor thesis. Supervisor- Assoc. Prof. Lina Spirgienė. Lithuania University of Health Sciences, Medical Academy, Nursing Faculty, Department of Nursing, Kaunas, 2026. Pages:50 Aim of the study: To explore international nursing students, experience how language proficiency influences their communication with elderly patients, relatives and health care teams in clinical practice. Research objectives:
- How does language proficiency affect international nursing students' communication with elderly patients during clinical practice?
- How do nursing students experience language proficiency on collaboration between international nursing students and the healthcare team.
- How do nursing students experience language proficiency on interactions between international nursing students and patients' family members. Methodology: A qualitative research method was used to understand and describe the influence of language proficiency on the patient care experience for international nursing students during clinical practice, a semi structured interview was carried out to collect data from participants with an original self-questionnaire formulated, the interview was conducted with eight (8) international nursing students from 3rd year and 4th year, the interview was carried out in a classroom at the Faculty of Nursing department, on the campus of the Lithuania University of Health sciences. Results: The results indicated that language proficiency had a massive influence on communicating with the elderly patients, working with the healthcare team, and communicating with relatives of patients. Clarity, confidence and involvement in clinical communication were low due to language barriers. Adaptive strategies and the support of the mentors, however, helped students to enhance the understanding and interaction. Conclusion: Language proficiency is essential in influencing the communication, confidence, and quality of care among international nursing students. To enhance the effectiveness of the communication and safety and patient-centred care in the multicultural context of health care, the strengthening of language training, cultural competence, and supportive clinical environments is required.
