(2024). ,,Net kai nėra vilties, vis tiek viltis yra“: moterų savęs patyrimas santuokoje su priklausomybę alkoholiui turinčiu vyru (Klinikinės sveikatos psichologijos magistro baigiamasis darbas). Problema.
"Even when there is no hope, there is still hope": women's self-experience in a marriage with a man with alcohol addiction (Master's Thesis in Clinical Health Psychology). The problem. Room et al. (2016) study highlights the need for more research, including qualitative research, to understand the experiences of relatives living with addicts. Balamurugan (2022) indicates that there is a lack of research on the problems faced by spouses of alcoholics. Based on this, it can be suggested that the self-experience of the spouses of alcohol dependent men in marriage is an understudied and underexplored topic. Methods. Eight women (aged 38-55) in a marriage with an alcohol-dependent husband (duration of the marriage ranging from 5 to 15 years) participated in a qualitative study. The data collection instrument in this study was an in-depth interview. The data were analysed using phenomenological descriptive analysis according to A. Giorgi. Results. The narratives of the participants in the study indicated an exploration of their inner world, in which the women identified a sense of awareness of the importance of seeking help for themselves, reflecting on their past, looking for reasons or their own guilt. Inner conflicts and dilemmas dominated, and ways to cope with overwhelming emotions were discovered. Women also shared intense and recurrent feelings – the unavoidable emotional reactions, the feeling of tension and fear due to their husbands' alcoholism, all leading to an emotionally difficult state – "the bottom". Women's experiences were closely linked to the specifics of the husband's phase of alcohol dependence treatment. In this phase, wives encouraged their husbands to seek help, felt emotionally tired and lacking motivation. Women worried about their husbands' psychological and physical well-being. There was a feeling that the husband was about to relapse. Alcohol problems in the family were sometimes silenced and unacknowledged, and there was a sense of public stigma on the part of the women. Another component of this common phenomenon is the complex and multifaceted relationship with the spouse. The distance, harshness and conflict, the different attitudes towards child-care, the balancing between divorce and living together, were clearly evident. The women's experiences showed a sense of hope even in the most difficult situations. However, in some cases hope was replaced by despair and hopelessness. The women's experiences reflected the impact of alcohol on the daily routine of the family and on the well-being of the children. The husband's alcohol consumption changed the rhythm of the day and the plans, which affected everyone in the family. Women also tried to distance themselves from their husbands' alcoholism. Over time, the women's experience reflected the destruction of their illusions of a perfect family and of their illusions of changing and saving their husbands. Conclusions. The self-experience of women married to a husband with alcohol dependence was revealed through self-analysis, unavoidable, recurring emotional reactions, a complex and multifaceted relationship with the spouse, and the internal experience of hope/despair.
