The topic of the study is to asses the larynx cancer patients needs from the viewpoint of the patient, his or her family and nursing personnel, using quantitative and qualitative research methodology. The significance of the reseaarch. The needs and difficulties of larynx patients are very significant in clinical practice. It is important to evaluate if the nursing needs are equally and adequately understood by the patient, family and the nursing personnel. It is a common practice to use the worldly acknowledged instruments. The use of the quantative method in the research improves the quality of the research and allows to deepen the understanding of the needs of the patient. The hypothesis of the research. The needs of the larynx cancer patient can be disclosed using the adapted version of Needs Evaluation Questionnaire and by disclosing the attitude of the family, nursing personnel towards the needs of the patient by means of quantitative research. The aim of the study is to determine the larynx patient needs by using Needs Evaluation Questionnaire and to assess the attitude of the family and the nursing by means of quantitative research. The goals:
- Determine the suitability and reliability of the Needs Evaluation Questionnaire by evalutaing the needs of the larynx patients.
- Determine the attitude of the family towards the needs of the patient by using partially structured interview.
- Determine the attitude of the nursing personnel towards the needs of the larynx cancer patient by using partially structured interview. In the quantative part of the research the Needs Evaluation Questionnaire was employed. The questionnaire was expanded by sociodemographic data, questions on the disease and Karnowski index. 44 larynx cancer patients participated in the study. The qualitative research was carried out with 5 family members participating and 5 nurses who agreed to answer the questions of the partially structured interview. The gathered data was generated by statistical programme SPSS.10. The Cronbach alfa coefficient for the questionnaire and 4 factors (subscales) was determined. Corelatative analysis for test–retest reliability was carried out. After the factorial analysis component matrices were formed according to the four factors. The needs are analysed with respect to sociodemograpghic and other indicators. During the qualitative research 10 categories, significant for understanding needs with respect to family‘s attitude towards the needs of the larynx cancer patient. In addition, 13 categories with respect to nurse attitude toward the needs of the patient were defined. Conclusions:
- Although the Needs Evaluation Questionnaire reliability was grounded by validity, the low Cronbach alfa (0.34) of the fourth factor, the negative correlation coefficient show that the questionnaire is not suitable for the evaluation of the needs of larynx patients.
- The most expressed needs of the patients that were analysed as separate questions in the quantative part of the research and dominated in the test-retest, were related to family support and help in controlling the symptoms of the disease and family relations.
- The results of the qualitative study show that the most important needs of the family members are the need to feel more attention from the doctors, to feel have family support and love and the need to not feel pain.
- During the qualitative research the most important needs of the patient from the nurses point of view are the need to have more information about the disease and related health problems, need for information about the treatment, the need to have help during the feeding, help during laryngectomy care and the need to feel family love and support.
