Gydytojai ir jų pacientai dažnai yra įsitikinę, kad dantų balinimas pažeidžia dantis. Manoma, kad dėl balinimo dantų emalis tampa mažiau skaidrus, o dantys ypatingai jautrūs. Tyrimai įrodo, kad taip nėra. Straipsnio autoriai siekė apžvelgti studijas, analizuojančias gyvų dantų balinimo kapomis saugumą, susisteminti ir pateikti patarimus, kaip šią procedūrą padaryti kaip galima saugesnę. Tyrimų duomenimis, gyvų dantų balinimas kapų pagalba yra plačiai taikoma ir pakankamai saugi procedūra. Priešingai paplitusiai nuomonei ji nepažeidžia dantų, dantenų ar restauracijų ir gali būti plačiai taikomas pagal indikacijas laikantis saugumo reikalavimų.

The traditional view holds that teeth bleaching produces have a negative effect on teeth causing enamel to become opaque and resulting in excessive teech sensitivity. Numerous research efforts into the matter have produced evidence that proves the opposite. The authors of the present paper reviewed a number of relevant research articles addressing the issue of the dentist-prescribed, home-applied vital teeth bleaching with the nightguard technique. The principal objective of the investigation was to assess the safety of the procedure and summarize the measures that can be taken with a view to enhancing it. The studies indicate that dentist-prescribed, homeapplied vital teech bleaching with the nightguard technique is a widely applied and sufficiently safe procedure. The safety of vital teeth bleaching with the nightguard has been well documented, the bleaching materials used for the purpose have been thoroughly studied and, contrary to the widely-spread opinion, it does not cause any harm to teeth, gums or restorations provided all safety requirements are complied with.
