Abstract
Introduction: Sternal osteomyelitis following cardiac surgery requires debridement and flap coverage. The VAC technique results in enhanced granulation and wound contraction, however it does not lead to complete coverage. Vascularised pedicles are the treatment of choise, and multiple, methods advocate various pedicied flaps. Distant or free flaps are described as alternatives. Methods: Individual approach considers localisation, sixe, depth of the defect, as well general condition of the patient. The operations were largely performed in the facility of the cardiac surgery in extremely sick patients. From 2000 to 2008, 35 patients were operated in the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Kaunas Medical University Hospital, Lithuania. [...].
