Abstract
In this paper, based on studies of Lithuania (Kaunas district), conducted in 1999, 2004 and 2009–2010, are considered material consumption and living conditions, cultural life and leisure, some of the value orientations. From 1999 to 2009 the consumption of material and symbolic goods has become more intense and diverse in forms. However, social differences among the population became more pronounced. Social differentiation is determined by income, age, nature of work, to a lesser extent by sex and type of settlements. One of the major factors that determine the social status of residents is the level of education. The authors argue that education in its turn generates significant differences in the level of consumption.
