The significant outcome of controlled intervention of well-established burns treatment plan: reduced hospital stay and rate of complications

Abstract

Background: Based on scientifically proven burns treatment methodology the general burns treatment plan at the Republican Vilnius University Hospital (Lithuania) was changed during the year of 2014-2016. The self-detaching of burn eschar was cancelled and o delay of skin grafting after burn escharotomy allowed. The time gap since burn injury did not modify the treatment method, however early exicision and immediate skin grafting was poriority. There were also changes in antimicrobial therapy, wound dressing, pain control and nutrition. Methods: 339 cases of the burn patients atmitted to the Republican Vilnius University Hospital during 2013-2016 (2013-- no intervention year) year period were analyzed Medical records of the patients were studied and objective data (age, sex, duration of hospitalization, thickness and surface area of the burn, total dose of medications prescribed, total number of episodes of blood transfusion and total number of units of blood components transfused, number of days until/after the first excisionand/or skin grafting and total number of fever episiode) was collected and analyzed.
