Abstract (en)
Innervation of the rectum and the sigmoid colon was investigated in Hirschsprung's disease by means of neuromorphological and neurohistochemical examination of the specimens taken from the walls of 10 resected guts and 51 biopsies of the rectum. In the narrowed region of the rectum, intramural nerve ganglia were absent in the muscular and submucosal layers, whereas proloferation of nerve fibres was discovered in all layers of the region. Well-developed nerve plexuses in the mucous membrane of the rectosigmoidal part of the colon wall with high activity of acetylcholinesterase allow to confirm the diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease.
