This volume (Gynaecological Cancers Volume 1: Cervical and Ovarian Cancer) is the second medical education programme in a series falling under the label' Oncology Academy. A previous programme, ErbB2-positive Breast Cancer, was published in 2009 and is currently being updated. In both breast cancer and gynaecological cancers, knowledge and practice change rapidly, in particular with respect to our understanding of mechanisms at the molecular level. The aims of the Oncology Academy series of programmes are: to present a broad overview of our knowledge to date; to present some of the more technical information at a level that is accessible to non-specialists; to interpret the results of key trials among the many that have been performed; to highlight areas of continuing uncertainly and ongoing research; and to act a useful reference source. Our original intention was to cover all the gynaecological cancers in one volume, but it became clear that this was too ambitious. Endometrial cancer and "other" gynaecological cancers (uterine sarcomas, vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer, and gestational trophoblastic disease) will therefore be covered in a second volume, to appear a year after this one.
