Abstract no. 121225
Background and aims Although investigations of humour usage in the treatment of people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) are not numerous, some unique findings create a need to go deeper into a topic. We aimed to disclose some potential benefits of humour in the treatment of PwMS with regard to the current state of scientific knowledge.
Methods A scoping review was conducted in accordance to PRISMA-ScR metodology. Information for literature review was collected in the PubMed and Embase databases by using for search humour and multiple sclerosis keywords. Overall, 10 scientific investigations were analized, grouped, interpreted and generalized.
Results The investigation disclosed: humour-based stress reduction for PwMS; relationship between executive function and humour coping in PwMS; exceptional benefits of humour to impact employment status among individuals with relapsing-remiting multiple sclerosis (RRMS); relationship between humour and personalized long-term prognosis of PwMS; the difference of humour comprehension in PwMS.
Conclusions The appropriate usage of humour (among other factors) may significantly reduce neuropsychological condition in persons with RRMS and assist them staying employed. Executive function as well as personalized long-term prognosis of PwMS are to some extent involved in humor. Group analyses revealed lower scores for RRMS patients for the humoristic visual tasks compared to scores of verbal tasks. PwMS were impaired in their comprehension of figurative and humorous items compared to their comprehension of literal items of simple medical responses.
