Objectives: Onlay block grafting for atrophied alveolar ridges is a well-established treatment modality that enables oral surgeons to prepare the site for qualitative implant placement. HOwever, the data is controversial regarding the resorbtion rate of the block grafts on the long run. The aim of this study was to perform a quantitative evaluation of the resorbtion rate of onlay block grafts. Material and methods: 125 consecutive onlay block grafts were included into this study of which 84 were fixed in the mandibular region and 41 in the maxillary region. According to the treatment protocol, implants were inserted 4-5 months following grafting procedures and implant uncovering along with vestibuloplasty were performed 4 months later. Before every surgical stage CBCT scan of the selected region was performed as well as 1 year after the surgery up to 3 years after surgery. The 3D CBCT data were processed and the volumes superimposed in order to evaluate the dynamics of the processes of modelling and remodeling of the bone grafts.
