Abstract (en)
Results of in-vitro studies have shown that cholinergic activity is increased in smooth muscle in diverticular disease (DD). However, the density of nerves in the bowel is reduced in senior age and the incidence of DD increases with age. The aim of this study was to determine the structural differences of the myenteric (Auerbach) nerve plexus (MNP) between the diverticulated sigmoid colon and the relatively normal one resected from patients operated on rectal tumors. The results of this study evidently demonstrate that the occurrence of DD is associated with structural alterations of the MNP in the human sigmoid colon.
