Perioperative period of elderly patients: course and outcomes

The aim of the study - to estimate the course of perioperative period among older with focus on cognitive functions. The Methods. 156 patients enrolled in the study: 99 patients aged 65 and older (mean age 76.2 ± 6.3 yrs) and 57 patients aged 45-64 (57.9 ± 5.4 yrs). Questionnaires used: Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, Geriatric Depression Scale, Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE), American Society of Anaesthesiologist physical status classification, Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) instrument. If the patient was recognized with delirium or early postoperative cognitive dysfunction (4 or more points lower than preoperative MMSE), he was considered as having postoperative cognitive disorder. Results. The preoperative MMSE score among older patients was significantly lower (25.07 ± 4.01) comparing with the middle-aged patients (28.11 ± 2.33) (p<0.001).
