Lithuanian Pharmacists’ Doctoral Dissertations as a Mirror of Scientific Evolution

Background: Doctoral dissertations reflect the development of scientific knowledge, research priorities, and academic leadership within a professional field. In the context of Lithuanian pharmacy, dissertations serve as important indicators of how pharmacists contributed to development of scientific knowledge during different historical periods. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the dynamics of scientific development in Lithuanian pharmacy through the analysis of doctoral dissertations and to evaluate the contributions of Lithuanian pharmacists to research and knowledge dissemination. Methods: The research is based on historiographical and bibliographical analysis combined with historical evaluation. A comprehensive list of doctoral dissertations prepared by Lithuanian pharmacists was compiled, including dissertation topics, institutions where degrees were defended and academic supervisors. The dissertations were classified by historical period and research field. In addition, institutional context and patterns of academic leadership were analysed. Results: The results reveal significant differences across historical periods. A total of 160 doctoral dissertations were defended by Lithuanian pharmacists. In the first half of the twentieth century, only two pharmacists – Benediktas Šiaulis (1936) and Kazimieras Grybauskas (1942) – defended their dissertations. During the Soviet period, the number of dissertations increased markedly to 75, with pharmaceutical chemistry as the dominant scientific field. Many Lithuanian candidates were supervised by scholars from other Soviet republics and defended their dissertations at universities outside Lithuania. Most dissertations were defended in Russia (18), including 15 in Moscow and 3 in St. Petersburg. In Ukraine, 16 dissertations were defended (8 in Kharkiv, 6 in Lviv, and 2 in Kyiv). Three dissertations were defended in Estonia all at the University of Tartu, and one in Belarus (Minsk). After the restoration of Lithuanian independence, 85 dissertations have been defended to date: 18 in the 1990s and 67 since 2000. In recent decades, pharmaceutical technology and pharmacognosy have become the leading research fields. Conclusion: The analysis demonstrates that doctoral dissertations mirror political, institutional, and scientific transformations in Lithuania, revealing shifts in research priorities, academic independence, and the formation of national scientific leadership in pharmacy.
