Abstract
Introduction. Radiotherapy is one of most important treatment modalities for some malignancies. However the radiation caused colorectal damages may occur, sometimes requiring the hospitalization and special treatment methods. Aim. To evaluate the clinical data of radiation induced colorectal damage which leads to evaluate the treatment methods. Methods. Retrospective analysis of case histories of patients, who were hospitalized to the Hospital of Lithuanian university of health sciences during 2007-2011 due to chronic postradiation colorectal damages. The cases of postradiation colorectal damage were selected according to International classification of the diseases. Results. Cases of 42 patients were analyzed: female – 18 (43%), male 24 (57%). Mean age – 71.8±6.8 years. Indications for radiotherapy were: prostate carcinoma – 23 (55%) cases, malignancies of uterus and adnexa – 17 (40%) cases, malignant myeloma – 1 (2.5%), pancreatic cancer – 1 (2.5%). The extent of damage: isolated radiation proctitis – 30 (71%) cases; radiation proctosigmoiditis – 8 (19%) cases, pancolitis – 2 (5%) cases, enterocolitis – 2 (5%) cases. The endoscopy findings were: mucosal neovascularization in 33 (79%) cases, mucosal neovascularization with ulcers in 3 (7%), ulcers in 3 (7%), mucosal scars in 3 (7%) cases. Most frequent complaints were: hematoschezia – 39 (93%), melena – 6 (14%), diarrhea – 6 (14%), abdominal pain – 4 (10%), constipations – 2 (5%) cases. [...].
