The aim and objectives of the doctoral studies at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences are based on the provisions of the effective Lithuanian legal acts related to doctoral studies; the study process and the preparation of the doctoral dissertation comply with the recommendations of the European University Association (EUA).

The aim of the doctoral studies at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences is to train researchers of the highest competence in the areas of Natural, Medical and Health, and Agricultural sciences, to carry out research and experimental development independently and to solve scientific problems.

TO DOCTORAL STUDIES

Rules of admission

Lithuanian University of Health Sciences announces the selection for state-funded and non-funded doctoral studies in the areas of Natural, Medical and Health, and Agricultural Sciences. University accepts applications for doctoral studies:

1. in the area of Medical and Health Sciences the fields of Medicine, Odontology, Pharmacy, Public Health and Nursing;

2. in the area of Natural Sciences in the fields of Biology and Biophysics;

3. in the area of Agricultural Sciences the fields of Veterinary and Animal Sciences.
Persons with a master’s degree (or equivalent higher education) may participate in the selection for admission to doctoral studies.

Main selection criteria:

  • the relevance of the doctoral application to the development objectives of the Faculty or the Research Institute;
  • the results of completing master’s or equivalent higher education qualification studies;
  • published research articles or papers if there are no published peer-reviewed research articles;
  • understanding and motivation of the scientific problems of the field of study where they are applying;
  • compliance of research with the strategic directions of the University’s development.

The applicant should submit the following documents to the Research Affairs Department:
1. application to participate in the competition (see below);
2. curriculum vitae;
3. recommendations by two researchers (the head of the department, where the applicant wishes to study, and the expected doctoral supervisor);
4. a copy of the master’s degree or equivalent higher education qualification diploma and its supplements;
5. a copy of the specialised medical practice license (for those applying to clinical departments);
6. list of bibliography (to be approved by the responsible LSMU library employee) and copies of scientific articles. Iif there are no published scientific articles, a scientific paper reflecting the focus of the research and work activities (the topic of the paper shall be proposed by the department that has requested a doctoral placement). The paper will be evaluated by the prospective doctoral student’s supervisor in the recommendation and given points based on the ten-point scale;
7. a copy of the document certifying the change of surname;
8. a copy of the entrance fee receipt.

Biophysics – N 011 Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in the Mathematics Sciences, Informatics Sciences, Life Science, Health Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, Agricultural Sciences study fields groups; in the Physical Sciences study field group in Physics; Engineering Science study field group in Bioengineering; in the Technological Science study field group in Biotechnology.
Medicine – M 001 Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in the Health Sciences study field group in Medicine.
Odontology – M 002 Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in the Health Sciences study field group in Odontology.
Pharmacy  – M 003 Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in the Life Sciences study field group in Medicine and Pharmacy; in the Physical Sciences study field group in Chemistry; Veterinary Sciences study field group in Veterinary, and in the Technological Sciences study field group in Biotechnology.
Public Health – M 004 Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in the Mathematics Sciences, Informatics Sciences, Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Law, and Business and Public Management study fields groups.
Nursing  – M 005 Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in the Health Sciences study field group in Medicine, Public Health, Rehabilitation, Nursing and Midwifery; in the Social Sciences study field group in Social Work and Psychology.
Veterinary – A 002 Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in the Veterinary Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Life Sciences study field groups; in the Health Sciences study field group in Public Health; and in the Technological Sciences study field group in Biotechnology Food Technology, Catering.
Animal Sciences – A 003 Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in the Veterinary Sciences study field group in Veterinary; in the Agricultural Sciences in Agriculture, Livestock, Food Studies; in the Life Sciences study field group in Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Ecology; in the Engineering Sciences study field group in Bioengineering, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry Engineering, Energy Engineering; in the Technological Sciences study field group in Biotechnology, Food Technology, Catering; in the Health Sciences study field group in Public Health.

For those seeking to obtain a doctoral degree extramurally

A person (hereinafter referred to as an external candidate) who has a master’s qualification degree, or an equivalent higher education can apply to obtain a doctorate degree extramurally. The external candidate must have prepared a dissertation, published the most important results of the dissertation in at least two articles published in international scientific publications with a citation index in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database, and have presented their research results at least at two international scientific events. A scientific monograph written by the candidate without co-authors may also be submitted as a dissertation for defense. An abstract of the monograph should also be provided. In this case, other scientific publications should be submitted if they are needed to illustrate the topic of the dissertation.

An external candidate must submit an application for defending a doctoral dissertation to the Rector, indicating the topic of the dissertation the research area and field. The application shall be accompanied by:

  • dissertation manuscript or published scientific monograph
  • a list of scientific publications and their copies;
  • a copy of a master’s degree or an equivalent higher education qualification diploma and its appendix (appendixes);
  • description of life, scientific and creative activities;
  • report of doctoral studies exams (if any) or their descriptions of doctoral study subject programmes.

The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences is granted the right to conduct doctoral studies in 10 research fields, in which more than 50 doctoral students enroll each year.
