{"id":62661,"date":"2022-05-12T07:29:52","date_gmt":"2022-05-12T04:29:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lsmu.lt\/about-lsmu\/structure\/veterinary-practice\/faculty-of-veterinary-medicine\/veterinarines-patobiologijos-katedra\/"},"modified":"2026-07-02T14:47:49","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T11:47:49","slug":"department-of-veterinary-pathobiology","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lsmu.lt\/en\/about-lsmu\/structure\/veterinary-practice\/faculty-of-veterinary-medicine\/department-of-veterinary-pathobiology\/","title":{"rendered":"DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PATHOBIOLOGY"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim of the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology is to deliver quality training of veterinarians in the relevant study programmes in accordance with the prescribed requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brief history: the origins of the Department date back to 1920, when the Bacteriology and Serology Station was established in Marva Manor, 3 km from Kaunas, with Prof. L. Gogelis as its head. In 1923, the station was transferred to the Veterinary Department of the University of Lithuania. In 1924\u20131933, the State Veterinary Bacteriology Laboratory operated in \u0160an\u010diai neighbourhood (Kaunas city). On 15 May 1933, it was moved to a new modern building in Vilijampol\u0117 neighbourhood (Kaunas city), and was renamed the State Veterinary Bacteriology Institute. The Institute was headed by J. Bielkevi\u010dius (1922\u20131936) and Prof. K. Kanauka (1936\u20131944). Following the reconstruction of the Department of Infectious Diseases, the discipline of veterinary parasitology was added to the Department of Epizootology and Microbiology in 1975. The Department was subsequently renamed the Department of Infectious Diseases (since 2016 \u2013 the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology). The Pathology Centre joined the Department in 2004. The Department of Veterinary Pathobiology was rebuilt, renovated and reconstructed in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the course of its history, the Department was headed by the following prominent figures: Assoc. Prof. Dr. J. Brazaitis (1945\u20131970); Assoc. Prof. Dr. V. Citvaras (1970\u20131977), Assoc. Prof. Dr. K. Norvai\u0161as (1977\u20131987), Prof. Habil. Dr. V. Paulikas (1987\u20131997), Assoc. Prof. Dr. V. Citvaras (1997\u20132004). Since 2004, the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology of the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy (from 2010 \u2013 the Veterinary Academy of LSMU) has been headed by Prof. Habil. Dr. S. The Department of Veterinary Pathobiology delivers training in the following study areas: morphology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, prophylaxis and control of infectious and invasive diseases in animals in biomedical sciences, veterinary medicine, food safety and animal science; pathomorphological diagnosis of animal diseases; pathophysiology and pathomorphology of animal reproduction; veterinary medicine legislation and drafting of regulatory documents. Activities in these areas include the publication of research and science popularisation articles, preparation and implementation of international and national research projects, development of course books, study\/training books, scientific monographs, teaching aids, research reports and presentations.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tab-c bordered \" id=\"tab-02\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose md:prose-lg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Department of Veterinary Pathobiology, its functional units (the Pathology Centre, the Laboratories of Parasitology and Histopathology) and auxiliary facilities have been reconstructed and upgraded, and the units have been equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for research and studies.<\/p>\n<p>The Department performs detection of infectious and invasive pathogens in animals and birds, contamination of pastures with parasite larvae; provides advice on the diagnosis, treatment, prophylaxis, and anthelmintic resistance of infectious animal diseases and zoonoses; investigates the parasite-host relationship and the effect of nutrients on the invasion of the gastrointestinal tract; and uses serological and molecular methods to diagnose bacterial, parasitic, and viral animal diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The Pathology Centre of the Department carries out pathological morphological examinations of animal carcasses, provides advice to veterinary specialists and animal breeders, and carries out forensic veterinary examinations.<\/p>\n<p>The Department reviews publications on veterinary pathobiology, carries out expert examination of veterinary medicinal products registered and re-registered in the country, performs the diagnostics of bacterial, chlamydial, parasitic and viral diseases, drafts various regulatory documents, and advises professionals and farmers on veterinary pathobiology control. The Department is a branch of the Republican Microbial and Cell Culture Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The Department cooperates, prepares projects and concludes agreements with foreign and national research and educational institutions, competent authorities and other economic operators carrying out state-funded and outsourced research works, and participates in their implementation.
