{"id":65909,"date":"2022-10-25T20:21:24","date_gmt":"2022-10-25T17:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lsmu.lt\/?page_id=65909"},"modified":"2023-12-28T16:37:35","modified_gmt":"2023-12-28T14:37:35","slug":"department-of-surgery","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lsmu.lt\/en\/about-lsmu\/structure\/medical-academy\/faculty-of-medicine\/departments\/department-of-surgery\/","title":{"rendered":"Department of Surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>THE GOAL OF THE LSMU DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By conducting research and implementing their results into practice, to analyse the causes of diseases, development mechanisms, to provide qualified assistance to patients with surgical diseases, to teach and develop virtuous, proactive, qualified future doctors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>TASKS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To participate in scientific research projects, actively implement research results based on scientific evidence in clinical practice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To participate in the undergraduate and postgraduate study programmes of the university, to apply advanced teaching methods in the study process<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To provide qualified modern, safe care to patients with surgical diseases, regardless of their race, gender, nationality, political and religious beliefs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Department of Surgery consists of two units:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Surgery Unit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breast Surgery Unit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Surgery Unit functions in three sectors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hepatopancreatobiliary and Endocrine Surgery (HPBE) Sector,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimally Invasive and Gastrointestinal (MIG) Surgery Sector,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coloproctology (KP) sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"page-content\">\n\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tabs-h mt-10\">\n\t\t\t\t<ul class=\"js-tabs full-color-tabs\">\n\t\t\t\t                    \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"current\" id=\"studies\"><a href=\"#tab-01\">Studies<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t                    \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li  id=\"research\"><a href=\"#tab-02\">Research<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t                    \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li  id=\"collaboration\"><a href=\"#tab-03\">Collaboration<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tab-c bordered active\" id=\"tab-01\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose md:prose-lg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>STUDY PROGRAMMES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The clinic has implemented a problem-based teaching system. Endocrinology and endocrine surgery module provides lectures on endocrine and obesity surgery and conducts practical work for fourth-year students of the LSMU Medical Academy.<\/p>\n<p>For fifth-year students of the Medical Academy, in the pathology module of the digestive system, students are taught the principles of diagnosis of diseases of the digestive system and the application of surgical treatment methods. Lectures are given, practical work and seminars are conducted.<\/p>\n<p>Students from abroad are also trained at the Department of Surgery. Students from Israel, Lebanon, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Germany, Spain, Sweden, India, the United Arab Emirates, and Taiwan apply the acquired surgical knowledge while working in their countries or in Western Europe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RESIDENCY PROGRAMMES, POSTGRADUATE STUDIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Department is the university\u2019s main base for the Surgical Residency and Abdominal Surgery Residency programmes. Every year, about 10 surgeons and abdominal surgeons graduate from postgraduate studies, who add to the ranks of Lithuanian surgeons.<\/p>\n<p>Doctor\u2019s training courses are held annually in the Department of Surgery, aimed at continuing the qualification of surgeons and abdominal surgery doctors. In them, doctors from other Lithuanian medical institutions learn about the practical possibilities and results of applying the latest treatment methods.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tab-c bordered \" id=\"tab-02\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose md:prose-lg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Pathogenesis, clinical and experimental studies of neoplastic and inflammatory diseases of the digestive system; clinical studies of digestive system surgery-induced metabolic changes, clinical surgery technology optimisation studies.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tab-c bordered \" id=\"tab-03\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose md:prose-lg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>ONGOING RESEARCH PROJECTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cNew aspects of alimentary treatment of obesity&#8221;. Partners: Klaip\u0117da National Hospital, Lithuania, Vaasa Central Hospital, Finland.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBilopancreatic loop length and course of diabetes after gastric bypass surgery&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cComparison of postoperative abdominal wall hernia treatment methods. A prospective study\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cImplication of promoter hypermethylation of tumour suppressor genes in the pathogenesis of pancreatic adenocarcinoma&#8221;. Project partner \u2013 Institute of Experimental Haematology and Transfusion, University of Bonn, Germany.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cExamination of DNA hypomethylation of genomic repetitive nucleotide sequences in blood of pancreatic adenocarcinoma patients\u201d. Vateri LINE-1 hypomethylation studies in different histomorphological forms\u201d. Partner \u2013 VU MF Surgery Clinic.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSearch for new molecular markers important for the prognosis and treatment of rectal carcinoma\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Participation in international programmes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>EOA (European Obesity Academy) international continuous project in cooperation with Stockholm Karolinska Institute (Sweden).<\/li>\n<li>Pancreas2000 \u2013 an international educational and scientific training programme for future pancreatologists.<\/li>\n<li>Regular annual international training courses for doctors in obesity surgery \u201cLaparoscopic Gastric Bypass\u201d.
