{"id":73649,"date":"2022-11-02T01:31:19","date_gmt":"2022-11-01T23:31:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lsmu.lt\/?page_id=73649"},"modified":"2023-11-29T16:20:55","modified_gmt":"2023-11-29T14:20:55","slug":"department-of-nephrology","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lsmu.lt\/en\/about-lsmu\/structure\/medical-academy\/faculty-of-medicine\/departments\/department-of-nephrology\/","title":{"rendered":"DEPARTMENT OF NEPHROLOGY"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The main directions of scientific activities<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main scientific direction of the Department of Nephrology is the diagnosis of acute kidney damage and chronic kidney diseases, prevention possibilities and optimisation of treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Directions of clinical activity<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clinical work in the Department of Nephrology is carried out in three departments of LSMU Kaunas Clinics Hospital: Nephrology, Detoxification Departments and Outpatient sector at the consulting polyclinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stationary Nephrology and Clinical Toxicology services are provided by the Department of Nephrology, which has 42 stationary beds, where a comprehensive diagnosis of kidney diseases is carried out, kidney biopsies are performed, kidney and urinary diseases are treated, arterial hypertension patients are treated, as well as patients who are poisoned by various toxic substances. At the Department patients are prepared for renal replacement therapy (haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, kidney transplantation), monitored and treated after kidney transplantation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Detoxification Unit with Dialysis and Clinical Toxicology Units has the most modern possibilities of renal replacement therapy and therapeutic apheresis and provides qualified nephrological support 24\/7. The Detoxification Unit has the largest dialysis unit in Lithuania, where up to 50 patients with acute and chronic renal failure can be treated at the same time, performing emergency detoxification procedures for poisoned patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nephrological outpatient care is provided in Kaunas Clinics Consulting Polyclinic, the Nephrologists work in the polyclinic in rotation according to pre-planned work schedules. Nephrologists working here provide comprehensive outpatient care for patients with various kidney and urinary tract diseases, arterial hypertension, and post-renal transplantation surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2017, the Centre for Rare Kidney Diseases was established (headed by Prof. I. Skarupskien\u0117).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Achievements of the Department<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LSMU Department of Nephrology occupies a leading position in Lithuanian and Baltic Nephrology. Since 2003 the Head of the clinic Prof. Vytautas Kuzminskis became the president of the Lithuanian Association of Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation (LNDTA) and was the Head of the organisation for 12 years. In 2015, Prof. I. A. Bumblyt\u0117 was elected as the President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clinic successfully carries out scientific research activities, the achievements of which are applied in practical Nephrology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Nephrology has a progressive and proactive team of doctors, and the newest methods of renal replacement therapy and therapeutic apheresis have been implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"page-content\">\n\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tabs-h mt-10\">\n\t\t\t\t<ul class=\"js-tabs full-color-tabs\">\n\t\t\t\t                    \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"current\" id=\"research\"><a href=\"#tab-01\">Research<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t                    \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li  id=\"cooperation\"><a href=\"#tab-02\">Cooperation<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tab-c bordered active\" id=\"tab-01\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose md:prose-lg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>12 doctoral dissertations have already been defended in the field of Nephrology:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Analysis of the Development of Haemodialysis Quality in Lithuania in 1996-2000. Maslauskien\u0117<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other research is being carried out:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prediction of Electrolyte Changes by Non-Invasive Methods in Haemodialysis Patients.<\/li>\n<li>Assessment of Changes in Diet and Metabolism in Haemodialysis Patients and Adaptation of Possible Corrective Measures.<\/li>\n<li>Hydration Status of Patients After Kidney Transplantation in the Acute Postoperative Period and Possibilities of its Correction.<\/li>\n<li>The Impact of Physical Activity on the Quality of Life and the Possibilities of Application of Haemodialysis Patients.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluation of Body Composition Changes in Haemodialysis Patients Using Bioelectric Impedance Analysis Method.<\/li>\n<li>Treatment With Wormwood (Lat. <em>Artemisia<\/em> <em>absinthium<\/em>) in Glomerulonephritis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Doctors of the clinic prepare and read presentations at Lithuanian and international conferences, regularly prepare and publish articles in journals with citation indexes, annually organise scientific practical conferences on various contemporary Nephrology topics, often world-famous Nephrologists are invited as lecturers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tab-c bordered \" id=\"tab-02\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose md:prose-lg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Participation in international studies, projects and programmes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Nephrology cooperates with colleague nephrologists from different countries of the world, the doctors of the clinic are members of many international organisations of nephrology.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Nephrology participates in the programme of the International Society of Nephrology <em>Sister Renal Centres<\/em> (SRC). The nephrologists of our clinic have gained experience at Ghent (Belgium) University Hospital Nephrology Clinic. After a decade of cooperation between LSMU and Ghent University Nephrology Clinic, , the LSMU Department of Nephrology was awarded the main prize of the International Association of Nephrology (<em>ISN<\/em>) for the most successful programme of <em>Sister Renal Centres <\/em>at the 2007 World Congress of Nephrology in Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n<p>From 2010 to 2015, the Department of Nephrology became a mentor to fellow nephrologists from Brest (Belarus) region hospital. Since 2016, a new trio of sisters has been established: Kaunas\u2013Brest\u2013Lutsk (Ukraine). Since 2016, colleagues from Brest and Lutsk have come to the LSMU Department of Nephrology twice a year for internships, and nephrologists from our clinic have been reading reports twice a year on the topics of nephrology, dialysis and transplantation in Belarus and Ukraine, as well as assisting colleagues in Brest and Lutsk in carrying out scientific work. The aim is to help develop the nephrology service in Lutsk (Ukraine).<\/p>\n<p><strong>We are involved in<\/strong> <strong>2 international multi-centre research<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe Influence of Time of Year and Geographical Latitude on the Regulation of Vitamin D in Healthy Individuals\u201d study was launched in spring 2015. The study takes place in 5 centres along the 24th eastern parallel of the Northern Hemisphere: Odense (Denmark), Kaunas (Lithuania), Sofia (Bulgaria), Athens (Greece) and Tampere (Finland).<\/li>\n<li>In 2016, we launched a study \u201cA Study Programme on the Analysis of Renal Disease and Complications of Chronic Renal Failure and Their Prevention Possibilities and Treatment Optimisation \u2013 Dialysis Initiation Study\u201d (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>In 2017, we led LSMU-KTU project<\/strong> \u201cStudy of Brain Damage in Dialysis Patients Through Non-Invasive Physiological Brain Monitoring\u201d, the results of the study were published in magazine <em>Medicina<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Since 2017 we have been participating in the project <\/strong>\u201cIndividualisation of Immunosuppressive Therapy With the Help of Pharmacokinetic Modelling and Prognostic Indicators for Patients After Organ Transplantation\u201d (with LSMU Institute of Physiology and Pharmacology).<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t            <script>\n
