{"id":76526,"date":"2022-11-02T02:37:36","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T00:37:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lsmu.lt\/?page_id=76526"},"modified":"2024-02-05T16:04:06","modified_gmt":"2024-02-05T14:04:06","slug":"department-of-radiology","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lsmu.lt\/en\/about-lsmu\/structure\/medical-academy\/faculty-of-medicine\/departments\/department-of-radiology\/","title":{"rendered":"Department of Radiology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ABOUT<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main objective of the activity \u2013 the application of modern, scientifically based methods of radiation diagnostics to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TASKS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\n<li>The search for the most optimal modern methods of radiological diagnosis by identifying individual pathological changes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research and application of new diagnostic methods in clinical practice would be based on scientific evidence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discussion and presentation of innovations and opportunities in radiology science in the study process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Continuous improvement of the provision of radiological assistance, improvement of qualification of radiology doctors and radiology technicians.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HISTORY<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purposeful development of radiography \u2013 radiology science is related to the Department of Roentgenology and Radiology established at the Kaunas Medical Institute at the time. This department was established in 1956. The heads of the Department were: P. Ja\u0161inskas (1956-1972), E. Keleras (1972-1977), L. Gradauskas (1977-1983). Later, the name and structure of the department were changed several times. In 1983, two small departments were merged into one unit, forming the Department of Anaesthesiology, Reanimatology and Radiology, the head of which was A. Luko\u0161evi\u010di\u016bt\u0117 (1983-1989), and the head of the Radiology unit \u2013 Gradauskas.<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In 1989, the Department of Radiology and Roentgenology began to provide courses in oncology, and the department was named the Department of Radiology and Oncology. The head of the department was Z. Satkevi\u010dius and of the oncology sector was S. Jara\u0161ius. This department operated until 1991. During the entire period of the existence of the department , there were employed (assistants, docents): J. \u0160ukyt\u0117-\u010caikauskien\u0117, A. Sutkus, H. Gintautas, R. D. Bandzaitien\u0117, V. T. Ragai\u0161ien\u0117, J. Kiudelis, E. Juozaityt\u0117, A. Basevi\u010dius, D. Virvi\u010di\u016bt\u0117-Skorupskien\u0117 and others. Specialised diagnostic offices were established: in 1963 \u2013 consultation clinics, in 1979 \u2013 neurosurgery branch, in 1989 \u2013 endocrinology branch. Special contrast, functional, ultrasonic, interventional methods have been introduced and applied, and computer tomography and radionuclide diagnostics have been developed. Since 1991, the Department of Radiology of KMU has been established. It\u2019s Heads \u2013&nbsp; Dr. V. Stankevi\u010dius (1991-1992), Prof. L. Gradauskas (1992-1997), Prof. Z. V. Satkevi\u010dius (1997-2002) and Prof. A. Basevi\u010dius (from 2002 to present). In the current LSMU Department of Radiology, 5 units are in operation \u2013 X-Ray (Head \u2013 Dr. E. Jonaitien\u0117), Tomography (Head \u2013 Prof. S. Luko\u0161evi\u010dius), Interventional Radiology (Head\u2013 Assoc. Prof. R. S. Kaupas), Nuclear Medicine (Head \u2013 Dr. G. Kuprionis) and the Radiological Diagnostics Unit located in the branch of Kaunas Clinics \u2013 Oncology Hospital (Head \u2013 Dr. I. Gineikien\u0117). In 2012, a new Radiology Diagnostic Centre was opened, adapted for clinical diagnostic and educational work, where the most complex Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) and other nuclear medicine studies are carried out. The Centre has 7 specialised units: neuroradiology, abdominal and pelvic radiology, thoracic radiology, skeletal and soft tissue radiology, facial-neck radiology, cardiovascular radiology and special radiology. Currently, the Department of Radiology employs over 250 people, including over 100 radiology doctors and echoscopy specialists, more than 50 residents, more than 80 radiology technicians and other nursing personnel. The Department of Radiology is the largest department of radiology diagnostics in Lithuania, where modern radiology diagnostic equipment is concentrated \u2013 digital X-ray and mammography equipment and offices, 10 ultra-sound diagnostic devices, 4 computed tomography devices, 3 magnetic resonance imaging devices, 3 gamma cameras, angiography and bone densitometry (Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA)) device, one of two in Lithuania \u2013 PET (positron emission tomography) device. Radiological examinations are carried out at any time of the day, as 3 radiology doctors and 3 resident radiology doctors are constantly on duty. If necessary, at any time of the day, not only diagnostic, but also therapeutic procedures of interventional radiology can be performed. The number of radiological examinations and procedures performed is constantly increasing. In 2017, more than 300,000 general X-ray scans were carried out, about 30,000 mammographic scans, about 30,000 bone densimetry (DEXA) scans, more than 60,000 UG scans, over 30,000 scans, over 8,000 MRI scans, more than 14,000 nuclear medicine tests (including more than 800 PET tests), more than 4,000 diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of interventional radiology. In the Department of Radiology, the only one in Lithuania, specialised cardiovascular CT (320 slice scanner) tests, MRI examinations of pregnant women suspected of foetal malformations, highly specialised functional MRI and CT (perfusion) and a whole number of other studies are performed.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"page-content\">\n\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tabs-h mt-10\">\n\t\t\t\t<ul class=\"js-tabs full-color-tabs\">\n\t\t\t\t                    \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"current\" id=\"science-and-studies\"><a href=\"#tab-01\">Science and Studies<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t                    \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li  id=\"international-partners\"><a href=\"#tab-02\">International Partners<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tab-c bordered active\" id=\"tab-01\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose md:prose-lg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In 2003, the International IAEA courses were held in Kaunas for the first time at the initiative of the employees of the Nuclear Medicine Unit of the Department of Radiology. In 2006, at the initiative of the employees of the Department of Radiology, the 1st Baltic Congress of Radiology took place in Kaunas, and in 2018 (October 5-6) the 7th Baltic Congress of Radiology will take place in Kaunas.<\/p>\n<p>The department is often attended by colleagues from abroad \u2013 USA, France, Denmark, Sweden, who take part in final residency examinations, defending dissertations, providing advisory and diagnostic assistance. Doctors of the department often improve their skills in seminars, conferences and internships of various duration in Lithuania and abroad. In recent years, doctors and residents of the Department of Radiology have improved their knowledge of radiology, mastered new diagnostic research methods in long-term (2-6 months) internships in various recognised international scientific centres: Geneva (Switzerland), London (UK), Turku (Finland), Bologna (Italy), Grenoble (France), Barcelona (Spain) and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Students, resident doctors, radiology doctoral students, radiologists improving their qualifications study radiology at the department. The Department of Radiology has approved or updated 17 doctor improvement programmes, where not only radiology doctors but also doctors of other specialties can improve and study. The Department of Radiology has renewed and approved a new residency programme in Radiology (accredited in the European Union). LSMU doctoral students are constantly actively choosing 3 elective doctoral programmes in the Department of Radiology. In the Department of Radiology various courses and modules\u00a0 of general and special radiology (Respiratory, Oncology and Haematology, Mobility System, Neurosciences etc), are attended and mastered by students of Dental and Oral Hygiene Specialties of Faculty of Odontology.<\/p>\n<p>In 2002-2017, 20 PhD students of neuroradiology, abdominal radiology, nuclear medicine defended their theses. The first textbook on <em>Fundamentals of Radiology<\/em> (2005) was prepared and published by the staff of the Department of Radiology, supplemented in the 2013 edition of <em>Fundamentals of Radiology<\/em>. Methodical means of radiological investigations of pathological changes in individual anatomical areas are also being prepared.<\/p>\n<p>5 professors work in the Department (A. Basevi\u010dius, S. Luko\u0161evi\u010dius, E. Monastyreckien\u0117, I. Kulakien\u0117, R. Gleiznien\u0117), 17 medical doctors (including 5 associate professors) and 19 assistants. Each year, the staff of the Department of Radiology\u00a0 publishes over 80 scientific articles (of which about 10 articles in publications with ISI coefficients) in Lithuanian and international scientific publications and presents over 150 scientific reports in various Lithuanian and international scientific events. Doctors of the Department of Radiology regularly participate in multidisciplinary patient discussions with various profile LSMU Departments, such as Oncology and Haematology, Surgery, Gastroenterology, Pathological Anatomy and others.<\/p>\n<p>New scientific work is also being prepared. The following fields of research are being implemented in the Department of Radiology: \u201cOptimisation of radiological examination methods in early oncological diseases and evaluation of the spread of the process\u201d. Radiology clinic, as a partner, participates in various \u201chard\u201d and \u201csoft\u201d scientific projects with various LSMU Departments (Cardiology, Pulmonology and Immunology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Oncology \u2013 Haematology, Gastroenterology etc), other partners (UAB Inta, : Ortho Baltic, LSMU Veterinary Academy, LSU, KTU, (VGTU).<\/p>\n<p>Currently, 18 doctoral students of the Department of Radiology are delving into the possibilities of examining the liver, pancreas, intestines, facial area, brain, blood vessels and other changes using various modern radiological methods. The Department of Radiology has a Student Scientific Society \u2013 Radiology team, where more than 200 LSMU students prepare and improve their scientific work. Radiologists of the Department of Radiology work in permanent Ministry of Health commissions, carry out expert examinations and perform other organisational \u2013 methodological activities.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tab-c bordered \" id=\"tab-02\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose md:prose-lg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>MATRA project, which, like many others, involves the Department of Radiology, partners abroad: Institute of Metrology and Technology in the Netherlands, Sweden (Gothenburg, Uppsala and Stockholm), Denmark (Viborg), Latvia (Riga), Estonia (Tallinn, Tartu), France (Paris and Grenoble), Switzerland (Geneva) and researchers of radiology departments of other countries Radiologists of the Department of Radiology regularly carry out training for doctors from Kazakhstan and go on targeted scientific-clinical field trips with the help of raising the scientific clinical level of radiologists of Kazakhstan doctors. Such visits are carried out at Astana (Kazakhstan) National Medical Holding base.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors of the Department are members of various European and global radiological societies \u2013 ESR (general radiology), ESNR (neuroradiology), ESGAR (gastro-abdominal radiology), ESUR (urogenital radiology), AURE (university radiologists), ESMRMB (magnetic resonance imaging), EANM (nuclear medicine), ESTI (thoracic radiology), RSNA (North American radiologists), etc. The Department of Radiology is the base of Kaunas Regional Radiological Society (currently uniting 140 members). As many as 15 radiologists of the Department of Radiology are members of the LRA (Lithuanian Radiological Association) Council.<\/p>\n<h3>You can find more information about radiology news <a
