The Geriatrics Centre has 50 beds at the Geriatrics Unit, 10 beds at the Inpatient Day Unit, and the Outpatient Unit. Comprehensive geriatric examination is provided to the patients including screening for cognitive impairment, depression, and malnutrition, swallowing disorders, assessment of daily activities, social status, and, if necessary, balance and coordination tests. The range of services provided by the Department also includes medication adjustments, design of special diets, occupational and physiotherapy treatments, and psychological counselling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-history\"><strong>History<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1922, a Therapy Clinic and Department were established at Kaunas University. In 1922\u20131938, they were headed by Prof. K. Buinevi\u010dius, in 1938\u20131940 by Prof. P. Gudas-Gudavi\u010dius, in 1940\u20131946 by Prof. J. Kup\u010dinskas. In 1946, the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine became a separate organisational unit. In 1954, the Department of Internal Medicine was replaced by the Departments of Hospital Therapy (headed by Assoc. Prof. Z.Janu\u0161kevi\u010dius) and Faculty Therapy. In 1954\u20131971, it was headed by Prof. J. Kup\u010dinskas, in 1971\u20131972 by Assoc. Prof. B. Vasiliauskas, in 1972\u20131992 by Prof. P. \u0160nipas. In 1985, the Department of Faculty Therapy was renamed Department II of Internal Medicine (headed by Prof. P. \u0160nipas), and in 1992, it was renamed Clinical Department II of Internal Medicine. It consisted of the Department II of Internal Medicine and the internal medicine units of Kaunas II Clinical Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1995, following a change in the content of its teaching, clinical and research work, the Clinical Department was reorganised into the Department of Geriatrics.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"page-content\">\n\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tabs-h mt-10\">\n\t\t\t\t<ul class=\"js-tabs full-color-tabs\">\n\t\t\t\t                    \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"current\" id=\"studies\"><a href=\"#tab-01\">Studies<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t                    \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li  id=\"research\"><a href=\"#tab-02\">Research<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t                    \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li  id=\"collaboration\"><a href=\"#tab-03\">Collaboration<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tab-c bordered active\" id=\"tab-01\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose md:prose-lg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Gerontology and geriatrics, care of elderly patients are studied at the Department by students and residents of the Faculty of Medicine, students of Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy programmes of the Faculty of Nursing, Master\u2019s degree students of Art Therapy, students of Oral Hygiene programme of the Faculty of Odontology. The Department of Geriatrics offers CPD courses for family doctors, internal medicine doctors, and geriatricians. The residency programme provides training to prospective geriatricians. The staff of the Department have published 5 textbooks on geriatrics for the students of the Faculties of Medicine and Nursing. An educational CD-ROM with training materials on dementia was released.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tab-c bordered \" id=\"tab-02\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose md:prose-lg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Department of Geriatrics currently conducts work under a research project on &#8220;Prevention, diagnosis, and management of health disorders in the elderly using medical and technological approach&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Research on clinical geriatrics, including early diagnosis of diseases in the elderly, functional disorders and their correction, quality of life, dementia, nutrition in the elderly, and gerontotechnology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research projects<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>International project <strong>&#8220;qEEG in Diagnosis of Dementia using Statistical Pattern Recognition&#8221;,<\/strong> involving researchers from Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Lithuania, collaborating through the<em> Nordic Network in<\/em> <em>Dementia Diagnostics<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lsmuni.lt\/media\/dynamic\/files\/21088\/00_senatviniosilpnumosindromas_advantage_projektas.pdf\"><strong>ADVANTAGE (Managing Frailty.<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/lsmuni.lt\/media\/dynamic\/files\/21088\/00_senatviniosilpnumosindromas_advantage_projektas.pdf\"><strong> A comprehensive approach to promote a disability-free advanced age in Europe: the ADVANTAGE initiative<\/strong><\/a> was a joint action\u00a0programme for addressing frailty prevention in the elderly, funded under the European Union&#8217;s Third Health Programme (2014\u20132020, Horizon 2020). The project involved 40 different organisations from 22 EU countries. The ADVANTAGE project developed a common approach to the frailty prevention in health and social care services, promoting consensus among European Member States, and provided a common framework for the treatment of the elderly diagnosed with or at risk of developing frailty. For more information please follow this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.advantageja.eu\/\">link.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>LSMU-KTU project <strong>&#8220;Gri\u016btis&#8221;<\/strong> to study the development and use of a fall detector.<\/li>\n<li>National Healthy Ageing Science Programme project (with KTU) <strong>&#8220;Smart Gerontechnology for Healthy Ageing&#8221;<\/strong> (iGeronTech) (2016\u20131018).
