Our objectives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ensuring that nursing and midwifery programmes are implemented in accordance with the European Union directive;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>integrating the study programmes and research in the area of nursing and midwifery;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>utilising information technology and effective teaching methods to train highly qualified nurses and midwives who are capable of adapting to a changing labour market.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The teaching staff at the Department of Nursing are nurses and midwives who graduated from LSMU with a Master\u2019s degree in clinical nursing, management, or public health management, as well as a PhD in biomedical sciences and nursing (see Contacts).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>History<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1990, the Kaunas Medical Academy established a department of nurses with higher education under the Faculty of Medicine. In 1994, as a result of the expansion of nursing studies and in accordance with the regulations and requirements of the University, the Department of Nursing and Care was established. A. \u0160e\u0161kevi\u010dius became the first Head of the Department. It was the first department of its kind in Lithuania. In 2021, the Department of Nursing and Care was renamed the Department of Nursing. Prof. A. Bla\u017eevi\u010dien\u0117 was elected Head of the Department of Nursing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1999, the MSc degree programme Clinical Nursing was established, and in the same year the admissions to the PhD programme of Nursing were launched. In 2017, the MSc degree programme in Clinical Nursing was reorganised into a Nursing Leadership Programme, in line with the guidelines developed by the WHO and International Council of Nurses. A new BSc degree programme Midwifery was launched in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first-cycle programmes in nursing and midwifery meet the requirements of Directive 2013\/55\/EU and have been accredited for 6 years by international experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, the Department of Nursing and Care was the first in Lithuania to launch a second-cycle MSc degree programme in Advanced Nursing Practice with three specialisations.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"page-content\">\n\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tabs-h mt-10\">\n\t\t\t\t<ul class=\"js-tabs full-color-tabs\">\n\t\t\t\t                    \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"current\" id=\"studies\"><a href=\"#tab-01\">Studies<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t                    \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t                    \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li  id=\"collaboration\"><a href=\"#tab-03\">Collaboration<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tab-c bordered active\" id=\"tab-01\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose md:prose-lg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>BSc programme \u201cNursing\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>The first-cycle study programme \u201cNursing\u201d is a full-time study programme for those who have completed secondary education. The \u201cNursing\u201d degree programme is 240 ECTS credits. It leads to a BSc degree in health sciences and a professional qualification as a general practice nurse. The study programme \u201cNursing\u201d is also available in English.<\/p>\n<h3>BSc programme \u201cMidwifery\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>The first-cycle study programme \u201cMidwifery\u201d is a full-time study programme for those who have completed secondary education. The \u201cMidwifery\u201d degree programme is 240 ECTS credits. It leads to a BSc degree in health sciences and a professional qualification as a midwife.<\/p>\n<h3>MSc programmes<\/h3>\n<p>The duration of the Nursing Leadership programme is 2.5 years. The aim of this programme is to prepare Masters in Nursing whose professional and research activities are based on the latest knowledge and evidence in nursing science, understanding of health policy, coordination of nursing and midwifery services, leadership, anticipation of alternative solutions, and preparedness for leadership, academic, and research work.<\/p>\n<p>The programme is based on the WHO strategic documents.<\/p>\n<p>The study programme offers an Msc in Health Sciences upon completion.<\/p>\n<p>Advanced Nursing Practice (MSc). Duration: 2 years. The aim of the MSc degree programme in Advanced Practice Nursing is to train highly competent advanced practice nurses equipped with contemporary knowledge, practical skills, critical thinking abilities, and a professional and personal value system. Graduates will be capable of applying research-based solutions to advanced practice nursing, working independently in diverse healthcare settings, and leading and managing change within the constantly changing multi-professional environment to effectively address challenges in the healthcare system. It leads to an MSc degree in health sciences and a professional qualification as an advanced practice nurse.<\/p>\n<h3>Doctoral (PhD) studies<\/h3>\n<p>Persons who have completed an MSc degree and aspire to a career as a researcher can pursue a PhD in nursing. Duration: 4 years. Upon successful defence of the doctoral thesis, the PhD degree in the field of nursing (biomedical area) is awarded.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"tab-c bordered \" id=\"tab-02\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"prose md:prose-lg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Research topics<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Evidence-based nursing and changing professional values. Head of the research topic: Prof. Olga Rikliken\u0117 and Prof. Aurelija Bla\u017eevi\u010dien\u0117.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>COST activities from 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Department implements COST activities administered by the Research Council of Lithuania.\u00a0<strong>Collaboratively Developed culturallY Appropriate and inclusive Assessment tool for Palliative Care EDUcation<\/strong>. Coordinator of activities: Prof. Olga Riklikien\u0117. The aim of this COST action is to develop gold-standard quality indicators for high-quality education and training in palliative care.<\/li>\n<li>Implements COST activity administered by the Research Council of Lithuania <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cost.eu\/cost-action\/ethics-in-dementia\"><strong>\u201cEthics in Dementia<\/strong><strong>(EDEM)\u201d<\/strong><\/a>. Coordinator of activities: Prof. Olga Riklikien\u0117. The main objective of COST is to reduce burnout and moral distress of among caregivers and promote the dignity, autonomy, and quality of life for people with dementia.<\/li>\n<li>Since 2020, the Department of Nursing has been implementing COST activity administered by the Research Council of Lithuania: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cost.eu\/cost-action\/international-interdisciplinary-network-on-smart-healthy-age-friendly-environments\/#%20tabs|Name:overview\"><strong>\u201cInternational Interdisciplinary Network on Smart Healthy Age-friendly Environments\u201d<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong>Coordinator of activities: Prof. Aurelija Bla\u017eevi\u010dien\u0117.<\/li>\n<li>Since 2020, the Department of Nursing has been implementing a new COST activity supervised by the Research Council of Lithuania <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cost.eu\/actions\/CA19121\/#tabs|Name:overview\"><strong>\u201cDeveloping Privacy-Aware Audio- and Video-Based Applications for Active and Assisted Living\u201d.<\/strong><\/a> Coordinator of activities: Prof. Aurelija Bla\u017eevi\u010dien\u0117.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>International projects<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Department of Nursing currently implements the project\u00a0<strong>\u201cHealth Professionals\u2019 and \u201cDigitAI team SkillS Advancement\u201d (H-PASS) <\/strong>(2023\u20132026),\u00a0funded under the EU4H programme (No. 11101139 (HaDEA).\u00a0The overarching aim of the H-PASS project is to design and test a curriculum with relevant modules (synchronous and asynchronous), to develop training materials and tools that target transversal skills and competenses and nurture digital skills. Target groups of the project: doctors, nurses, midwives, and pharmacists.\u00a06 partner countries of the project: Italy, Greece, Romania; Cyprus, Hungary, and Lithuania. Project leader:\u00a0Prof. Aurelija Bla\u017eevi\u010dien\u0117.<\/li>\n<li>Project \u201c<strong>Development of Home visitation early intervention model<\/strong>\u201d LT03-2-SAM-TF-002 (2020\u20132024). This project is the first initiative in Lithuania to help families, in particular those from vulnerable groups, to develop parenting skills, to help create a safe environment for children, and to change the \u201ccultural-historical\u201d awareness in relation to childcare and upbringing. This project will create a patient-centred service, raising awareness of families and helping them embrace greater responsibility for their health and safety and those of their children. More details: https:\/\/seimoslankymas.lt\/<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Projects implemented during 2018\u20132023<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Accelerating master and PhD level nursing education development in the higher education system in Kazakhstan (AccelEd),\u00a0<\/strong><strong>2020\u20132023<\/strong> (No. 618052-EPP-1-202-1-EPPKA2-CBHE-SP). The project is part of the Erasmus+ programme. Project coordinator: LSMU (Lithuania). Project partners: AMU (Kazakhstan), AAU (Finland), JAMK (Finland), KNMU (Kazakhstan), KMU (Kazakhstan), NU (Kazakhstan), MoH (Kazakhstan), MoEds (Kazakhstan), UMCU (Netherlands), SKMA (Kazakhstan). The project activities in Lithuania are coordinated by Prof. Aurelija Bla\u017eevi\u010dien\u0117.<\/li>\n<li>Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership\u00a0<strong>\u201cQuality Mentorship for Developing Competent Nursing Students\u201d<\/strong>\u2013 QuaMent), 2018\u20132021. LSMU was represented by Prof. Olga Riklikien\u0117.<\/li>\n<li>The Erasmus+ project<strong>\u201cTake Care International: TCI\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0(Project 2019-1-DE02-KA202-006562; 2019 \u2013 2021). Participants: Prof. Olga Riklikien\u0117.\u00a0<strong>Project objectives<\/strong>: to set up a sustainable and active network of nursing educators to share experiences, research, and resources related to the provision and teaching of spiritual care; to enable nursing educators to acquire new knowledge and skills in order to embrace and communicate the personal, religious and spiritual aspects of patient-centred care; to examine the focus on the personal, religious and spiritual aspects of patient-centred care in different European countries; to identify the antecedents and barriers to the implementation of spiritual care competences in nursing student education; to develop and test an innovative, dynamic and flexible model for the development of nurses\u2019 spiritual care competences, based on good practice in European countries; to disseminate the results of the project among students, patients, and the public.\u00a0<strong>Project activities<\/strong>: review of nursing programme curricula, design and testing of the model, two dissemination events, and training events. Improvement of patient care services in Polish-Lithuanian borderland<\/strong>&#8221; (No. LT-PL-3R-246) under the Interreg V-A Lithuania-Poland Cross Border Cooperation Programme (2019\u20132020). The project activities in Lithuania were coordinated by Prof. Aurelija Bla\u017eevi\u010dien\u0117.<\/li>\n<li>In 2017\u20132020, together with the Department of Preventive Medicine, the ERASMUS+KA2 project IHOD\u00a0<strong>\u201cImproving healthcare outcomes in chronic disease \u2013 enhancing the curriculum at masters level\u201d <\/strong>(586094-EPP-1-2017-1-1E-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP (2017-2902\/001-001) was implemented. Every year, the Department hosts or employs professors from foreign universities (Finland, UK, USA, Japan) who give lectures to students and organise training sessions for teachers.<\/p>\n<p>The
