Equine strongyles are among the most prevalent and most important gastrointestinal parasites in horses. For a long time now, infections with those parasites are solved by anthelmintic treatment. However, careless use of these drugs has resulted in development of worldwide problem in veterinary – anthelmintic resistance (AR). The aim of this research was to examine the infection level of strongyles in horses, as well as the efficacy of two anthelmintics – pyrantel (PYR) and fenbendazole (FBZ) – and the anthelmintic resistance to both drugs in six stables of Aukštaitija region. The samples of faeces of each horse (n=97) were taken and investigated using the modified McMaster method, Strongyles faecal egg count (FEC) before treatment was calculated. All horses (100%) were infected and have met the requirements for the study (FEC ≥ 200): 23.7% of the horses had a medium infection level and 76.3% of the horses had a high infection level (p < 0,001). The importance of links with horse age and infection were determined: high infection level was more prevalent in young horses (≤ 5 years old) compared to adults (> 5 years old) (89,8% vs. 62,5%, p=0,002; OR 5,28; 95% CI 1,768-15,769; p=0,003). Horse age correlated inversely with FEC before treatment (r = -0,6, p < 0,001). The significance of horse gender and breed links with FEC before treatment was not detected. The horses were distributed to three groups in a random order: PYR treatment (n=30), FBZ treatment (n=30), and control (n=37). The groups were not different according to age, breed, gender, FEC before treatment and infection level (p > 0,05). Furthermore, the faecal samples were collected repeatedly, fourteen days after treatment, and using faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) the efficacies of PYR and FBZ were examined, as well as the AR of the strongyles. PYR efficacy was 99,89%, which is considered as high (FECRT > 98%). FBZ efficacy was 89,04% and is considered of low effectiveness (FECRT 80 – 89%) and AR to FBZ was detected.
