Objectives The aim of this systematic review was to with a sensitive search strategy assess the effects of NSAIDs on the outcomes of bone augmentative surgical procedures associated with dentoalveolar implant surgery and on dental implant outcomes themselves. Material and methods Electronic literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane register of controlled trials. The search strategy identified 1009 records on the 28th of February 2022. After the deduplication process 828 records were screened based on title and abstract. 22 full text reports were assessed for eligibility. Only randomized controlled trials were included in this review. Results Totally 2 articles were included in this review. Both of them considered bone healing around dental implants with and without NSAID usage. No articles regarding NSAID use and bone augmentation were identified. The risk of bias was assessed via the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Meta-analysis made on one study with low risk of bias showed a mean difference of 0,1 mm(0,25mm lower to 0,23mm higher) lower marginal bone level compared to placebo, with a high certainty of evidence. Meta-analysis could not be conducted regarding implant loss or risk of infection. Conclusions This systematic review showed that there is evidence to suggest that NSAID use has no clinically or statistically significant effect on marginal bone level. However as this was based on one study, confirming studies would be desirable. Included studies were not powered to detect implant failure or infection. No articles regarding NSAIDs effect on bone augmentation outcomes were found. Further research is necessary in order to fully understand the effects of NSAIDs on bone healing associated with dental implants and bone augmentation procedures in humans.
