Abstract
Johann Friedrich Wolfgang was born on 17 of June 1776 in the Great duchy of Lithuania. In 1801 graduated from Vilnius Imperial University, and had acquired pharmaceutical master's degree. Served at Vilnius pharmacies and in 1804 was appointed to head Vilnius St. John pharmacy. In 1810 Johann Friedrich Wolfgang was granted pharmaceutical and pharmacology professors' degree and headed newly set up pharmaceutical department. As well he published articles in Pamiętnik farmaceutyczny Wilenski (was one of its founders and editors), Dziennik Medycyny, Chirurgii i Farmacji etc. His works were dealt with the history of pharmacy, application of medicinal plants, raw material forgery cases. Professor verified at the University pharmacy the majority of pharmaceutical science discoveries and spread this kowledge among Lithuanian and Polish pharmaceutical communities. Vilnius Universtity's closure coincided with professor J.F. Wolfgang retirement. The professor was among the founders of Vilnius medical society, initiated its pharmacy section, pioneered periodical pharmaceutical press in Lithuania. Owing to his diligence, openness to innovation and charisma the pharmaceutical studies at Vilnius University reached the Western European level. J.F. Wolfgang disciple - professor S.B. Gorski was pharmacy lecturer at Vilnius medical-surgery academy till academy was canceled. Professor J.F. Wolfgang died on 19 March 1859.
