The role of alumni organization in the improvement of public health training: Lithuanian experience

The Faculty of Public Health at Kaunas University of Medicine was established in 1994. During the period of 1994-2000, significant progress has been made in development of public health training. Now Faculty offers training for all degrees: Bachelor, Master, and Doctor of Public Health. During the recent years, improve of the quality of training deserved major attention at the Faculty of Public Health, involving all possible partners, and, especially, graduates from the Faculty. The aim of this paper is to present the possible ways of Alumni organization to participate in the improvement of public health training. The Alumni organization at Kaunas University of Medicine was developed in three stages. The first stage was dedicated for the evaluation of the needs for such organization. The questionnaire survey was carried out in June 2002 among the graduates from the Faculty. 94% of those graduated in 2002 took part in the survey (46 graduates). Nearly 83% of respondents expressed the willingness to establish the Alumni organization at the Faculty of Public Health and to become the members of it. According to the results of the survey, the graduates and the administration of the Faculty should initiate the development of Alumni organization. The next stage was the meeting of the initiative group. The decision was made to establish the Alumni organization, and to organize constituent assembly. This assembly will be the third stage in the development of Alumni.
