We examined 93 children and adolescents (51 boy and 42 girls) suffering from IDDM for 4 years aged from 9-16 years old. Palpable goitre was detected in 34 children (36.6%): 17 boys and 17 girls. Thyroid volume was more than 97‰ in 10 children (10.7%). Hypoechogenic thyroid in ultrasonography was detected in 6 children (17.6% among children with palpable goitre and 6.5% among all children): diffuse hypoechogenic pattern was in 5 children (3 boys and 2 girls) and 1 girl has a hypoechogenic nodule 0.6 cm in diameter. Fine needle aspiration revealed lymphocytic infiltration in these 5 children and identified colloid in the nodule. These 5 children were positive for microsomal antibodies and euthyrotic. So autoimmune thyroiditis was detected in 5.4% among all investigated for thyroid disorder diabetic children. Children and adolescents with IDDM should be carefully investigated for thyroid disorders.
