Introduction. Origanum Onites L. essential oil, whose primary constituents are carvacrol and thymol, has been related to several biological activities, including antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, insecticidal, hepatoprotective, and cytotoxic action [1]. When exposed to oxygen, light, and temperature, essential oils become unstable and prone to deterioration. The antioxidant and other properties of Origanum Onites L. essential oil can be improved since liposome formulations can increase the stability, solubility, and bioavailability of bioactive components contained in essential oils [2]. Glutathione (GSH) acts as an important intracellular antioxidant that protects against lipid peroxide, reactive oxygen, and nitrogen species, which can harm cells. To determine whether liposomes containing Origanum Onites L. essential oil can cause an antioxidant effect, GSH concentration should be measured. Aim. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential antioxidant effects of liposomes containing Origanum Onites L. essential oil on GSH concentrations in the liver and brain of BALB/c laboratory mice following aluminium exposure. Methods. BALB/c laboratory mice were selected as the subject for investigation. GSH concentration in the brain and liver homogenates were determined using spectrophotometry. Results. Results showed that although the mean value of GSH concentration was lower in the aluminiumtreated group, aluminium did not statistically significantly (p>0.05) reduced GSH concentrations in the liver and brain of mice when compared to the control group. Findings demonstrate that compared to the aluminium-treated group, liposomes containing Origanum Onites L. essential oil statistically significantly (p<0.05) increased GSH concentration in mice liver and brain after being exposed to aluminium. Conclusion. Administration of Origanum Onites L. essential oil-containing liposomes can increase GSH concentration in mice liver and brain and the conclusion was made that liposomes containing Origanum Onites L. essential oil may have an antioxidant effect.
