Health Promotion and Treatment by Doctor Ksawery Wolfgang (1809–1864) in Druskininkai (Lithuania) Spa Resort

Introduction: The spa resorts and sanatoriums are places to accumulate health, beauty, and well-being. In Lithuania, spa traditions began developing in the 19th century. K. Wolfgang participated in the creation of resort in Druskininkai. Aim of the study: to review the traditions of body and "soul" healing cherished in Druskininkai resorts in the first half of the 19th century. Materials and methods: The report explores the publications of the spa resort newspaper "Ondyna Druskienickich Zródeł" ("The Mermaid of Druskininkai Springs") publications. Used literature: Reda Griškaitė monograph “Mineralinis miestelis” („Mineral water town“). Results: The report reveals the treatment methods used in the resort, procedures and medicines for beauty and health as well as entertainment which was recommended and prohibited by doctor K. Wolfgang. Treatment traditions with mineral springs, mud, kumis, diet, appropriate activity, rest regimen, etc., were developted in Druskininkai. Conclusions: K. Wolfgang developed the traditions of sanatorium treatment following the example of European spa resorts. The most significant healing power was mineral water and lifestyle, which claimed to also heal the soul.
