Baltaodžių populiacijose odos melanomos atvejų sparčiai daugėja. Daugybė veiksnių: aplinkos, konstitucinių ir jungtinių, lemia šio naviko paplitimą. Svarbiausias melanomos rizikos veiksnys – daug įgytų pigmentinių apgamų. Vaikystėje odos melanoma gana reta, tačiau pigmentiniai apgamai vaikams labai dažni – net 98 proc. baltaodžių bent vienas pigmentinis apgamas atsiranda dar ankstyvoje vaikystėje. Daug tyrimų, atliktų per pastaruosius 40 metų, įrodė, jog šviesi odos spalva, didesnis polinkis saulėje nudegti nei įdegti ir dažni odos nudegimai vaikystėje didina apgamų paplitimą tarp vaikų bei paauglių.
The incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma is increasing dramatically in white populations. Multiple factors are involved in the increasing incidence of this tumor such as environmental, constitutional and combination factors. Presence of large numbers of acquired melanocytic nevi is the strongest risk factor for malignant melanoma. Cutaneous melanoma is uncommon in the pediatric population. In contrast, melano- cytic nevi are extremely common in children, with more than 98 per cent of Caucasians developing at least one nevus by early childhood. A series of studies conducted over the past 40 years have shown that the fair skin complexion, propensity to burn rather to tan in the sun, and frequent episodes of childhood sunburn increase nevus prevalence in childhood and adolescence.
