Intimal-medial thickening of the carotid artery wall and endothelial dysfunction are considered early markers of atherosclerosis, but there were no enough studies about the expression of these markers in young persons with different cardiovascular risk. The aim of the study: To investigate the intima-media thickness (IMT) of the carotid artery and the endothelial function of the brachial artery in quadragenarians and evaluate its expression according to the cardiovascular risk. Methods: We evaluated 180 persons (94 females and 86 males), mean age 40.1+ 1.2 years. IMT was evaluated in the 3 segments of the left and right carotid artery: 1- in the common carotid artery 1 cm before bifurcation; 2 - in the bifurcation; 3 - in the internal carotid artery 1 cm after bifurcation. 3 measurements were done in the near and further wall of the carotid artery. IMT was evaluated as normal when measured , 0.09cm, thickened . 0.09 cm and measurement . 0.15 cm were evaluated as atherosclerotic plaque. Examination of the brachial artery for evaluation of the endothelial derived vazodilative (EDV) function was done in the rest and during 1 min after pressure test (5 min pressure . 200 mm Hg). The 3 measurements of the diameter of the brachial artery were done and vazodilatation capability was evaluated. Increament of more than 10% of the brachial artery diameter after pressure test in comparison with rest diameter was evaluated as normal endothelial vazodilatative function. [...]
