Background. Due to the demographic change the number of patients in geriatric care, in nursing homes as well as in hospital care will rise further in the years ahed. With this increase of patients the awareness of their possible sensory handicaps and a provision of suitable education, care and technical support should grow as well. Method. The project group, in cooperation with the European Academy for Medicine of Ageing (EAMA) Course VIII, conducted a European multicenter survey in nursing homes, mobile care facilities and geriatric hospitals in 6 European countries, using a structured questionnaire for the various segments of the geriatric team (nurses, physiciants, therapists etc.) looking into the level of problem awareness, staff education and provision of technical support in the geriatric care of patients with a hearing impairment.
