Group I. Biological aspects of tooth extraction, socket healing and indications for socket preservation

Abstract

Bone loss after tooth extraction may lead to two main challenging situations: it can create an aesthetic problem around the pontic region of the gingiva in the fixed dental prosthesis resulting in soft tissue recession, or it can make the application of dental implant more challenging requiring guided bone regeneration. Severe bone damage after tooth extraction may force the clinician to change the implant placement protocol from immediate to dalayed protocol. The aim of consensus working Group I was to review the classic and current literature about extraction socket classification and the rationales for socket preservation procedure and with reference to it suggest clinical decision tree for extraction socket augmentation in aesthetic and non-aestetic area.
