The aim of the research was to assess frequency and type of operating nurses’ injuries caused by needles and other sharp instruments. The research was conducted in January-April, 2013 in tertiary hospitals of Vilnius and Kaunas, Lithuania. Two types of questionnaires "Accidental injury" (,,Ein stecktan stich”) and "Reduce the risks of infection – avoid needle puncture" (,,Infektionsrisiken senken – Nadelstichverletzungen vermeiden) designed by German scientist Dr. Sabine Wicker were used for this research. Questionnaires were translated into the Lithuanian language. In total 200 questionnaires were distributed, 185 questionnaires were filled in and returned back and among them 10 were not fully answered. For statistical analysis, 175 fully answered questionnaires were used. Statistical data analysis was carried out using SPSS 17.0 and Microsoft Excel software packages. The statistical significance of the data was verified by chi quadrant (χ2) test and statistical significance (p). Data difference is significant at p<0.05. The analysis of the data showed that among the respondents there were no operating-room nurses not injured at least once in their workplace during the entire time of their professional activities. The study revealed that puncture by a needle was the most common (40.6 percent, n=71) injury among respondents. In most cases (46.3 percent, n=81) during the injury working tools were contaminated with blood. In assessing the severity of injuries of the operating-room nurses, it was found out that the surface injuries were suffered by 48.6 percent (n = 85) of respondents.
