Abstract
This textbook provides general fundamental information about sutures that are used in small animal veterinary surgery: their origin, properties, classification, standardization, packaging, package code meanings and indications for the use of suture material for suturing various tissues and organs. It also gives information about surgical needles used for bringing together dissected tissues, their brief characteristics and the area of application, needle holders, forceps, scissors, types of suture material and knots used in suturing technique in small animal veterinary surgery. This is a small part of the lecture and practice materials of the “Small Animal Surgery” module of the LSMU VA Faculty of Veterinary Medicine study program. Individual chapters of the textbook are accompanied with illustrations that help better understand the text. The authors hope that students, after studying the material presented in the textbook, will be better prepared for practical work and will more easily understand and assimilate the information presented during lectures. This textbook contains information about the tools used for suturing wounds, such as needle holders, forceps, scissors with a large number of illustrations and the main suturing techniques used in the practice of small animal surgery with first-choice sutures. This textbook is intended for students of the “Veterinary Medicine” study program of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, but it may also be useful for freshly graduated veterinarians who are still thinking and planning to practice veterinary surgery or for those who have just started it.
