The toxicity of SO2, and NO2 to plants when present separatelyin the atmosphere is well documented (Lockyer, 1985). There is much less information on the effects of combinations of pollutants on plant growth and especially at the concentrations that occur in rural environments. Present assessments of the potential threat of pollutants to vegetation should be concentrated on investigations of the subtle effects of long-term low concentration exposures. To date, the vast majority of studies carried out worldwide have concentrated on trees and crop plants (Darrall, 1989).
