A commemorative plaque was unveiled in the main building of the Veterinary Academy in honour of the eight members of the Provisional Council of the Veterinary Academy, established in 1936 – the individuals who laid the legal, academic and organisational foundations for the future higher education institution.

This year also marks the 90th anniversary of the sculpture of the Vytis horse, a long-standing symbol of the Veterinary Academy.

From the founders’ idea to international research

The Veterinary Academy and wider University community were addressed by LSMU Rector Professor Rimantas Benetis, Chancellor of the Veterinary Academy Professor Mindaugas Malakauskas, and Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Juozas Olekas. Representatives of the Government and local authorities, members of the University community, and partners from academia and industry also attended the anniversary celebrations.

Congratulating the Veterinary Academy on its significant anniversary, LSMU Rector Professor Rimantas Benetis emphasised the importance of its historical development, discussed prospects for the Academy’s future growth, and highlighted the One Health concept, which recognises the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health.

“Many biological processes are universal. Emerging infections and their economic consequences require close cooperation between medical professionals, veterinary specialists and researchers,” the Rector said, emphasising the close links between the University’s two academies.

Professor Benetis also discussed the impact of artificial intelligence and other new technologies on studies and professional careers, and welcomed the growing number of national and international research projects. According to the LSMU Rector, the time has come for the Veterinary Academy to develop a vision for its own biotechnology centre.

Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Juozas Olekas described the 90th anniversary of the Veterinary Academy as an opportunity to reflect on its remarkable journey and its contribution to Lithuanian science. He stressed that today the Academy’s mission extends far beyond animal health: in a globalised world, the health of people, animals and the environment is closely interconnected. According to Mr Olekas, it is therefore important to foster the integration of research, studies and clinical practice, as well as cooperation between the academic community and policymakers in addressing new challenges.

Knowledge in the service of society

“Ninety years represents a long and meaningful journey shaped by many generations of the Veterinary Academy. Each has left its mark – on people, research, studies, professional traditions and the very spirit of the Academy.

Over these decades, the Academy has been changing, growing and keeping up to date with the latest developments, yet its fundamental purpose has remained the same: to contribute through knowledge, research and professionalism to animal health, the well-being of society and the provision of safe food.

Today, our task is not only to remember and appreciate what has been created, but also to ask ourselves what we want the LSMU Veterinary Academy of the future to be. Our strength lies in our ability to preserve what is most valuable while embracing change: introducing new technologies, strengthening research, the quality of studies and internationalisation, and deepening our engagement with society. I believe that the greatest strength of the LSMU Veterinary Academy will continue to be its people – their expertise, responsibility and determination to create,” said Professor Mindaugas Malakauskas, Chancellor of the LSMU Veterinary Academy.

The celebrations concluded with a musical programme. Singer Jurga Šeduikytė performed for the guests, alongside the folk-dance ensemble Džigūnas, which is itself celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. The academic anthem Gaudeamus igitur was also performed.

The individuals behind the founding of the Academy

Lina Baršauskienė, Head of the LSMU Veterinary Academy Museum, recalled the circumstances surrounding the establishment of the Veterinary Academy and the people entrusted with creating the new higher education institution in her presentation, The Provisional Council of the Veterinary Academy: Eight Remarkable Individuals.

Following the adoption of the Law on the Establishment of the Veterinary Academy in 1936, the Provisional Council of the Veterinary Academy was formed. It was responsible for drafting the Academy’s Statute and study programmes, recruiting teaching staff, establishing the institutional structure and developing the facilities required for teaching. The Council was chaired by Stasys Jankauskas, Director of the Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania, with Vincas Katelė serving as Secretary. Its other members were Professor Konradas Juozas Aleksa, Dr Kostas Kanauka, Professor Vladas Lašas, Kazys Miknevičius, Dr Juozas Mykolas Užupis and Dr Juozas Žemaitis.

The Veterinary Academy was officially opened in Kaunas on 19 September 1936. In its first year, 16 students and nine non-degree students began their studies there. The establishment of the Academy provided significant impetus for the development of veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, the diagnosis and prevention of infectious animal diseases, food safety and training of professionals in Lithuania.

A historic decision and new opportunities

In 2010, Kaunas University of Medicine and the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy merged to form the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. The two equal academies – the Medical Academy and the Veterinary Academy – brought together their expertise within one of Lithuania’s largest higher education institutions training professionals in the health, agricultural and veterinary sciences.

The merger expanded opportunities for international and interdisciplinary studies and research and strengthened links between human and animal health, food safety, biology and biotechnology. The unified University structure made it possible to consolidate research capacity, upgrade the infrastructure, undertake joint national and international projects, and further develop the One Health concept.

Research at the Veterinary Academy has also reached a new level of excellence. Its achievements include a Lithuanian Science Prize awarded in 2013. Six VA researchers have become full members of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, while three have become members of its Young Academy.

LSMU’s research potential in the agricultural sciences has also received favourable recognition from international experts. In the Research Council of Lithuania’s 2023 comparative assessment of research activities for 2018–2022, LSMU’s research in veterinary sciences was described as internationally recognised, while its research in animal sciences was rated very good.

The only of its kind in Lithuania

The LSMU Veterinary Academy is the only higher education institution in Lithuania that trains veterinary surgeons. Its Veterinary Medicine study programme holds international accreditation from the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE), and the qualifications awarded to its graduates are recognised across Europe.

The Veterinary Academy comprises the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Animal Sciences, Institute of Animal Science, Institute of Microbiology and Virology, Dr. L Kriaučeliūnas Small Animal Clinic and Large Animal Clinic. The Academy delivers study programmes in veterinary medicine, food science, food safety, animal science, and human–animal interaction, while also conducting international research.

We would like to remind you of the key information to follow in the event of a potential emergency. Warnings are issued by sirens or alerts sent to mobile phones:

• “Air-raid warning” – an immediate threat from the air. Seek shelter immediately.
• Yellow alert – heightened state of alert; a potential threat exists. Be prepared and follow official information.
• Red alert – an air raid or attack is in progress. Seek shelter immediately.
• White alert – the threat has passed and the situation is safe.
• “Attention everyone” – detailed information and instructions will be broadcast on radio or television within 3 minutes.

What should you do when you hear an “Air-raid warning”?

Most importantly, remain calm. Proceed calmly and in an orderly manner to a safe location. Take shelter in a basement, underground passage or designated shelter.

If you are inside a building, move as far away from windows as possible. Seek shelter in a corridor, following the “two-wall rule”, or in a bathroom.

Turn on LRT radio or television and follow official alerts and updates on your phone. All staff and students will receive additional information if the situation changes.

Detailed information on emergency preparedness and the locations of the nearest shelters in Kaunas and throughout Lithuania is available on Lithuania’s official civil protection website www.lt72.lt and via the LT-Alert mobile app.

We encourage everyone to remain calm, support one another and rely only on information from official sources.

Neuromuscular diseases can affect much more than muscles responsible for movement. They can impair breathing, heart function, swallowing and nutrition, affect bone health, cause pain and limit a person’s autonomy. Patient care therefore involves a wide range of professionals, including paediatric and adult neurologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, orthopaedic and trauma surgeons, rehabilitation specialists, physiotherapists, dietitians, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

According to Prof. Kęstutis Petrikonis, Professor at the Department of Neurology of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences and Chair of the Society of Neurologists, some of the most significant breakthroughs in neurology over the past decade have been made in the field of neuromuscular diseases.

“Gene therapy is already performed in practice, and it is already possible to manage severe diseases, including spinal muscular atrophy and myasthenia, which were previously considered untreatable. We are also expecting breakthroughs in the treatment of other diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. At the same time, equal access to expensive new medicines and providing appropriate patient care in the context of growing life expectancy are common challenges in all the countries,” says Prof. Petrikonis.

Medicines are only part of the picture

The scientific programme of the conference covered the entire patient pathway – from accurate diagnosis and the selection of treatment to monitoring respiratory and cardiac function, nutrition, bone health, orthopaedic care, physiotherapy, rehabilitation and pain management. A dedicated session focused on the latest developments in the treatment of myasthenia, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and polyneuropathies.

Milda Dambrauskienė, a paediatric neurologist at the Department of Neurology of Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno Klinikos, emphasises that even when no disease-specific treatment is yet available, consistent monitoring and timely support from different specialists can help stay a few steps ahead before the complications emerge.

“Over the past few decades, the life expectancy of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy has increased from the teenage years to 30–40 years of age. This was not achieved through any miracle drug. High-quality multidisciplinary care has made an enormous

difference: timely initiation of ventilation, medicines that protect the heart muscle, and orthopaedic care. Today, we must do everything we can to ensure that patients remain in the best possible condition until an appropriate new treatment becomes available to them,” says M. Dambrauskienė.

This year’s programme also placed considerable emphasis on the role of patients themselves. A session on patient empowerment addressed the transition from paediatric to adult healthcare and the importance of patients taking an active role in decisions about their care.

“You may not be an expert in the disease, but you are the best expert in your own care,” encouraged Prof. Ros Quinlivan from the United Kingdom, who has worked in the field of neuromuscular diseases for more than 30 years.

Sofija Belogorceva, a patient representative from Latvia, also shared her personal experience.

For patients and their families, dietitian Dovilė Urbanavičiūtė-Minelgė at Kauno Klinikos shared important nutritional considerations when patients experience difficulties associated with impaired mobility or swallowing

“The patient is an important member of the team. The doctor understands the disease, while the patient knows their own day-to-day situation best – what helps them and what does not. When people take an active interest in their condition and become involved in their own care, outcomes are better,” says M. Dambrauskienė.

From accurate diagnosis to quality of life

Key speakers at the conference included Prof. Edoardo Malfatti from France, an expert in myopathies who highlighted the importance of an accurate diagnosis for subsequent patient care; rehabilitation specialist Eva Kristina Melin from Sweden; and Prof. Anna Kostera-Pruszczyk from Poland, who presented recent developments in the treatment and prognosis of myasthenia. The pool of experts also included representatives from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia who shared their experience with the participants.

At the conference, Prof. Petrikonis discussed the mechanisms of pain in neuromuscular diseases. Although pain is sometimes assumed to be uncommon among these patients, research shows that, depending on the disease, it affects 50 to 80 per cent of patients. Pain may be muscular, joint-related or neuropathic, and its management therefore requires a multimodal approach.

According to Dr Evelina Grušauskienė, Head of the Centre for Neuromuscular Disorders at Kauno klinikos, the Baltic School of Neuro-Myology is becoming an important platform bringing together specialists from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia and providing an opportunity to discuss both the latest advances and the challenges encountered in everyday practice.

“Lithuania, and Kauno klinikos in particular, has a significant advantage in providing multidisciplinary care because specialists from different fields work in one place. This also

makes it easier to transition patients to adult care once they reach adulthood, although better coordination of these services is still needed,” says Dr Grušauskienė.

The event was aimed at neurologists, paediatric neurologists, geneticists, pathologists, pulmonologists, orthopaedic and trauma surgeons, physiotherapists, medical doctors and general practice nurses.

The conference was organised by the Lithuanian Association of Paediatric Neurology, the Lithuanian Neurological Association, the Lithuanian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology and Neurosonology, the Centre for Neuromuscular Disorders of the Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno Klinikos, and the Department of Neurology of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, together with neuromuscular societies and specialist teams from Latvia and Estonia. During the conference, sponsors also presented some of the latest and most innovative treatments for neuromuscular diseases that are already available in Lithuania.

The post Additional Call for ERASMUS+ Exchange 2026/2027 appeared first on LSMU.

The festive procession of students, members of the Rectorate and faculty deans along Laisvės Avenue marking the opening of the new academic year is a long-standing LSMU tradition. It symbolises joy, a sense of community, freedom and identity, traditions and continuity of the University, and its part in the life of Kaunas.

Symbolically, first-year students of LSMU, including many international students, were the largest group in the procession, testifying to the multicultural atmosphere of one of the most international universities in Lithuania.

The LSMU community and students embarking on their studies, gathered in Nepriklausomybės Square, were welcomed by LSMU Rector Professor Rimantas Benetis. The Rector emphasised that studies at the University begin with certain traditions, one of which is the festive procession on the first day of the academic year.

“I wish you every success in your studies. They will not be easy, but your faculties will be there to support you and give you strength. The University keeps upgrading its infrastructure for your convenience and needs. I wish you every success as you become professionals in the health, life and agricultural sciences,” said the LSMU Rector.

Professor Jūratė Macijauskienė, Chairperson of the LSMU Senate, expressed her delight that the LSMU community was beginning yet another academic year together, warmly welcoming the people of Kaunas, sharing in the excitement of first-year students, and greeting the lecturers ready to guide the students through the world of professional knowledge.

Rugilė Kriaučiūnaitė, student representative and President of the LSMU Student Union, also welcomed the large group of first-year students.

“The University will give you a great deal – knowledge, competences, new connections and opportunities – but university life is not only about what we receive, but what we bring to it ourselves as well. Do not be afraid to be the ones who ask questions, who say, ‘We can do better.’ Do not wait for the university life simply to happen to you – be the ones who also shape it. I wish you confidence in following your path,” said R. Kriaučiūnaitė.

Chloë de Moura, President of the International Student Committee, addressed international students with a word of encouragement: “If you are here today, it is not by chance: you have earned your place through your own efforts. Learning will not always be easy, but there will always be people around you who are ready to advise, help and share their insights. Do not isolate yourselves, stay curious, and never stop seeking knowledge,” said Chloë de Moura.

Nepriklausomybės Square then hosted a fair showcasing a wide range of activities at LSMU. First-year students were introduced to organisations, student initiatives, sports and artistic groups as well as other opportunities available at the University alongside lectures and practical classes.

Among those presenting their activity were the LSMU Student Union, Sports Centre, student associations, the academic choir, dance groups, the Cynology Centre, the Wildlife Rescue Centre, and other University organisations. First-year students were encourage not only to seek professional knowledge, but also to take part in sport, creative activities, volunteering, engage in community life and meet like-minded people.

The academic year opening events continued across LSMU faculties, and Holy Mass for the LSMU academic community took place at Archcathedral Basilica of Apostles St. Peter and St. Paul of Kaunas.

White coats presented to all first-year students

A special tradition pioneered in Lithuania by LSMU – the presentation of white coats, symbols of their future profession, to all first-year students of the University – was also part of the academic year opening celebration.

According to Professor Andrius Macas, Dean of the LSMU Faculty of Medicine, the international White Coat Ceremony tradition emerged in the United States towards the end of the twentieth century, and the LSMU Faculty of Medicine was the first in Lithuania to adopt and foster the tradition, at the initiative of the then Dean of the Faculty, Professor Dr Algimantas Tamelis.

“This is not merely a ceremony at which a coat is presented. At its heart are responsibility, professional commitment and the relationship with the patient. Medical students come into contact with patients while they are still studying, so it is important from the very beginning to understand that the white coat represents not a privilege, but a duty. The tradition embodies professionalism, integrity and unconditional commitment to the patient,” emphasised Prof. A. Macas.

According to Associate Professor Dr Laura Malakauskienė, Dean of Student Affairs, the Student Affairs Office initiated and continues the tradition of presenting white coats to all LSMU students, irrespective of their faculty or study programme.

The white coat symbolises responsibility, professionalism and respect for human and animal life, while also embodying the spirit of community and the values that unite all LSMU students.

Growing numbers choose to study at LSMU

LSMU begins the new academic year with a larger first-year student community. Following the second additional admissions around, 1,129 students signed study agreements with the University – almost 100 more than last year.

Medicine remains among the most popular study programmes. This year, 385 applicants signed agreements to study medicine: 168 in state-funded places and 217 in self-funded places. Compared with 2025, 40 more students chose medicine. According to the 2026 data published by the magazine Reitingai, LSMU continues to be one of the two highest-rated universities in Lithuania.
