Patient 3- and 5-Year Survival Outcomes for Laryngeal and Hypopharyngeal Cancer According to Treatment Modality
[Pacientų, sergančių gerklų ir hipofarinkso vėžiu, 3 ir 5 metų išgyvenamumo analizė pagal taikytą gydymo metodą]

Introduction: Laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers are malignancies of the upper aerodigestive tract with high mortality rates. The location of the tumor and the stage of the disease affect the treatment options common treatment modalities include surgery, radiotherapy, and chemoradiotherapy. The stage at which the disease is identified has a major influence on treatment effectiveness and survival outcomes. While surviving rates are mentioned in literature, it is clinically important to choose wisely among different treatment techniques and their results at different stages in order to make the correct decisions about therapy. Aim: To compare treatment approaches and 3- and 5-year survival rates among patients diagnosed with laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer. Objectives:

    1. To analyze 3- and 5-year survival rates for patients with laryngeal cancer, comparing outcomes across different treatment modalities (e.g., surgery, radiotherapy, chemoradiotherapy).
    2. To analyze 3- and 5-year survival rates for patients with hypopharyngeal cancer, comparing outcomes across different treatment modalities (e.g., surgery, radiotherapy, chemoradiotherapy).
    3. To investigate the influence of disease stage on treatment outcomes and survival rates for both laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer.

Methods: This study was conducted as a systematic literature review. A structured search of the PubMed database was performed to identify relevant studies published within the last 10 years. Titles and abstracts were screened, followed by full-text assessment of eligible articles. Inclusion criteria consisted of original studies evaluating survival outcomes in laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer according to treatment modality. Studies not meeting relevance or methodological quality criteria were excluded. The review process followed PRISMA guidelines.

Results: This study evaluated survival rates of patients with laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers with three- and five-years surviving rates after their diagnosis. Survival rates were analized according to the type of treatment and the stage of disease. Different treatment modalities are associated with different survival outcomes,on one example surgical and non-surgical therapy had distinct effects on the success. In general, survival rates were better in the earliest stages of the disease, but they were worse in the later stages. In both laryngeal and hypopharyngeal carcinoma groups, the stage of the disease affected the treatment outcomes.

Conclusions: Treatment modality and disease stage are particularly crucial in determining how long patients with laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers will live. Patients with early-stage disease have a better chance of surviving, whereas patients with advanced disease have a harder time getting treatment and a lower chance of surviving. Comparing survival statistics for different forms of treatment might assist doctors globally to find the most accurate treatment and provide patients with these malignancies with better care.
