The aim of this article - to expand knowledge about the causes of periodontal disease initiating reasons occuring because of post and cores, as well as an overview advantages and disadvantages of the different types of post-cores. Methods. A literature survey was performed using Medline database. Used key words: post type, finite element analysis of post systems. The articles from 1980 to 2011 related to topic were identified. Selected articles published in dental journals in English. Full texts of the selected articles were analyzed. Results. It was found 228 articles but only 36 article corresponded to selected criteria and analyzed. In these 36 articles was analyzed the influence of bacterial microflora and mechanical stress to the periodontal tissues, various types of the posts and changes of bone resorption. Conclusions. Mechanical stress to periodontum due to mastication, endodontical treatment, type of post and cores are also responsible for periodontal diseases. Glass fiber posts are more elastical because of the materials made of. These posts forms less stress for periodontum because of their elastical features as they are close to characteristics of dentin.
