Abstract

Relevance of the problem and aim of the work. Everyone has a different view of what a beautiful smile is. Although the aesthetic evaluation of a smile is subjective, this study aims to investigate the attentiveness of different groups of students to specific aesthetic criteria of a smile. The aim of this study is to find out LUHS Odontology and other faculties students‘ opinion about the influence of tooth colour, shape and the midline of the upper dental arch on the aesthetics of the smile.
Material and the methods. The data collection was carried out using an original questionnaire consisting of 24 questions and divided into 3 parts. The first part consisted of questions about socio- demographic indicators, the second part - questions about the concept of smile aesthetics and its importance, and the third part of the questionnaire consisted of photographs of different smiles, modified with “Adobe Photoshop 2022“ program, to visually assess the perception of aesthetics of respondents. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out using „IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0“ software. Results. The study involved 734 students from different faculties of LUHS. Males accounted for 8.3% and females for 91.7% of all respondents. It was found that among the three smile aesthetics criteria (tooth colour, tooth shape, and the midline of the upper dental arch), tooth colour has the greatest influence on smile aesthetics, and the midline of the upper dental arch has the least influence. Changes in tooth colour, such as yellowed and darkened teeth, are the most unattractive. Faculties differ in their assessment of smile aesthetics criteria. Odontology students consider a triangle to be the most aesthetically pleasing tooth shape, while students from other faculties consider an oval. The smiles with a midline shift of the upper dental arch are rated worse by students of Odontology faculty than students of other LUHS faculties. Statistically significant gender differences were found in the evaluation of the relevant elements of the smile (p < 0.05).
Conclusions. Students from different faculties and genders have different perceptions of certain smile aesthetics criteria, but they agree that the colour of the teeth has the greatest influence on the aesthetics of the smile, while the midline of the upper dental arch has the least influence.
