Excerpt from the introduction by Prof. Luciano Saso: “Drug development is a very complex and capital-intensive procedure that requires many different competences in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, pharmacy, pharmacology, and biotechnology. Many important drugs have been discovered by chance, but good scientists know that, as Louis Pasteur said, ‘chance favours only the prepared mind’. John Newport Langley (1852–1925) and Paul Ehrlich (1854–1915) came up with the receptor theory, proposing the use of a method of selection that, for many years (and in some cases still today), has led to the development of effective drugs without any understanding of their mechanism of action.”
