Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) is one of the two best state universities in Lithuania. This became clear when the magazine Reitingai presented its 12th comparative assessment of university study programmes. This year, LSMU scored 61.43 points out of a possible 100, which is the second-best result in the ranking.

The university has held high positions in the rankings in this field for several years in a row. According to rating analysts, for the third year in a row, the fiercest competition among universities is for second and third place – which is good news for applicants, as it demonstrates the efforts of university administrations to achieve quality in various aspects.

LSMU’s leadership in the comparative ranking is all the more significant because LSMU is a specialised university and successfully competes with the country’s classical universities. LSMU does not offer studies in most of the fields evaluated in the rankings, such as law, engineering, humanities, mathematics, etc.

Another new and significant indicator is the emotional attitude of the country’s employers towards one or another higher education institution. In a survey conducted by the magazine Reitingai, when asked which higher education institution they would like their child to attend, as many as one-third (over 30%) of the employers surveyed indicated LSMU.

This is a particularly high indicator for a specialised university that offers studies in only some fields, and employers’ opinions about alumni are given the highest weight in this year’s rankings – 30 ranking points.

“Lithuanian University of Health Sciences remains among the strongest universities in Lithuania. We are proud of our leadership in as many as seven fields of bachelor’s and integrated studies, three fields of master’s studies, and the achievements of LSMU Gymnasium (Grammar school).

LSMU is the clear leader in all fields of integrated studies, and we are highly regarded by employers, parents of schoolchildren and graduates themselves – every year we attract the most talented young people. The quality of studies, an attractive study environment, and the unity of science, studies and practice are the University’s priorities,” said LSMU Vice-Rector for Studies Prof. Indrė Čeponienė.

Integrated study programmes lead the way

In the new ranking, LSMU confidently leads the way in the group of integrated health sciences programmes: all four programmes – Medicine (84.92), Odontology (84.93, 1st-2nd place) , Pharmacy (78.38), Veterinary Medicine – received the highest scores.

In the group of bachelor’s degree programmes in health sciences Rehabilitation (86.97), Nursing/Midwifery (90.66) were rated the highest, and Oral Care was also highly rated. In master’s studies, Public Health (83.15) and Nursing/Midwifery (87.41) were rated highest.

Universities were evaluated according to 42 different parameters, including the number of high school graduates who passed all state exams with high marks (86–100) and chose a specific university, and the number of students admitted to state-funded/non-state-funded study places. The employment rates of graduates, the number of students who dropped out of their studies, and the average income of graduates 12 months after graduation were also taken into account.

In total, this year the magazine Reitingai evaluated 93 bachelor’s and integrated study programmes and 83 master’s study programmes.

Every year, the magazine Reitingai also publishes a subject ranking of Lithuanian gymnasiums (Grammar schools). The results are excellent for the LSMU Gymnasium. This year, the LSMU Gymnasium is the best in Lithuania among those teaching the Lithuanian language and among those teaching geography.
