Since the dawn of civilisation, human beings have been tempted to seek comfort. Technology is advancing rapidly, and science continues to push its boundaries. Many opportunities and conveniences we are enjoying today could scarcely have been imagined by our grandparents. Yet civilisation and comfort come at a cost. The so-called “diseases of civilisation” have emerged.
Many people today spend most of their time indoors. When environments are created, economic and technological factors usually take precedence, while human health, well-being, and social aspects are overlooked.
The interaction between humans and the environment is reciprocal. By exploring and adapting to it, people ultimately craft a comfortable life and become consumers. But this often leads to unforeseen troubles, inconveniences, and even harm. The same is true of the impact of civilisation on human health: comfort has been accompanied by negative health consequences. The modern, technologically adept person of our civilisation has not become healthier. On the contrary, people become afflicted by various chronic conditions, mental health issues, allergies, and newly emerging diseases linked to the progress of civilisation. At the same time, while medical care continues to progress, it is often too expensive and fails to effectively overcome these challenges.
Studies have shown the connection between the environment and health and revealed how environmental exposure affects both human and animal health and is closely linked to individual physiological characteristics.
However, pinpointing the impact of environmental factors on specific diseases is difficult, as they usually result from a complex interplay of multiple influences.
When investigating any issue, the choice of research methods and terminology is also of great importance and needs to be discussed.
We invite you to explore these and related questions at the 23rd International Medical Congress on the topic: “PREVENTION – DIAGNOSTICS – TREATMENT – REHABILITATION OF CIVILISATION DISEASES”

The congress is intended for doctors of all fields, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, midwives, odontologists and oral hygiene specialists, pharmacists, public health specialists, food safety and food science specialists, art and other therapy specialists, biochemistry and genetics specialists, medical engineers, medicinal chemistry specialists, terminologists and professional language specialists, wellness and healthy lifestyle specialists, complementary and alternative healthcare apitherapy specialists, lifestyle medicine specialists, laboratory medical biology specialists, veterinary medicine and animal science specialists.
University and college lecturers, students of all degrees, doctors are invited to participate in the congress and present papers.

Young Doctors Competition
The Young Doctors Competition offers a great opportunity for students and young professionals to showcase their talent. The competition is held by UMEA, the main organiser of the 23rd International Medical Congress. The Young Doctors Competition aims to encourage students and young doctors to actively engage in scientific and professional activities and to demonstrate their capabilities. Each participant will give a short oral presentation of their work, research, or case study at the 23rd International Medical Congress.
To join the competition, please complete the registration form and submit your abstract by 30 May 2025. The registration fee must be paid by 15 June 2025.

THE HIGH PATRON OF THE CONGRESS
Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis (Born 1951) is a member of the European Parliament from 2024 July, a former WHO Special Envoy for the European region, a former European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, a heart surgeon, a co-signatory to the 1990 Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania.
Andriukaitis’ family was deported to Siberia in June 1941. He, his mother and two older brothers were allowed to return to Lithuania in 1958; his father returned in 1959. After excelling at school, he enrolled at Kaunas Medical Institute, graduating in 1975. In 1976 Andriukaitis started his career in politics as a member of the underground Social Democrat movement, but later continued his studies by pursuing a degree in history at Vilnius University, graduating in 1984.
Andriukaitis was elected to the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania, which preceded Seimas (Lithuanian Parliament), in 1990. Andriukaitis was a member of the Lithuanian Parliament for six terms, from 1992 to 2004 and from 2008 to 2012, and was a deputy chairman of its council from 2001 to 2004. He was a health minister of the Republic of Lithuania from December 2012 until the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker appointed him to serve as an EU Commissioner in November 2014. After the term as the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Andriukaitis became WHO Special Envoy for the European region in March 2020 and in July 2024 he became a member of the European Parliament.
