‘Help’ is a widely used term whose meaning might appear to be self-evident. However, when considering help in difficult situations there are many layers of meaning and complexity. A critical element in the examination of help is the degree to which it is thought of as a relational endeavor and a process. In this brief talk I aim to offer some ways of thinking of help. I hope to stimulate discussion of how some of the themes in Levinas’s work such as ‘immanence’ and ‘other’ can deepen our understanding and everyday practice of help. Or perhaps to re-frame it altogether.
