The Department of Emergency Medicine is responsible for the emergency medicine modules within the LSMU medical curriculum and delivers the five-year Emergency Medicine Residency Programme.
The Emergency Medicine Residency Programme is university postgraduate professional training programme with a strong emphasis on clinical practice. Upon successful completion, graduates are awarded the professional qualification of Emergency Medicine Physician and become eligible to obtain the corresponding medical practice licence.
Training is delivered by the Department of Emergency Medicine of the LSMU Medical Academy, with the Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno klinikos serving as the principal clinical training base.
During their residency, our emergency medicine residents develop the competence to independently:
- recognise and manage life-threatening conditions;
- perform emergency treatment and surgical procedures;
- provide both basic and advanced life support;
- lead a resuscitation team;
- make clinical decisions in complex and rapidly evolving emergency situations.
Admission to the residency programme requires a Master’s degree in Medicine and the professional qualification of Medical Doctor.
During their studies, residents are employed by their training institution under a fixed-term employment contract. They receive a resident doctor’s salary funded from the state budget.
The programme also offers an exceptional international opportunity to spend up to one year of the training period at a partner clinical institution abroad. This enables residents to gain first-hand experience of emergency medicine systems, treatment approaches and clinical practice in other countries.
The Department of Emergency Medicine conducts research addressing the most significant challenges in emergency medicine.
Main research areas:
- Emergency diagnosis of acute illnesses and traumatic injuries;
- Basic and advanced life support algorithms;
- Recognition and management of critical conditions;
- Management of mass casualty incidents and high patient volumes;
- Organisation of emergency care and patient triage methods.
The Department actively implements international medical innovations in both its research and clinical practice, evaluating their effectiveness and applicability within the Lithuanian healthcare system. Research findings contribute to improving patient diagnosis, treatment, resuscitation processes, and the education and training of future emergency medicine specialists.
