Summary: Each year, approximately 14,000 children and adolescents in Europe are diagnosed with cancer. Although survival rates have improved, around 20% of paediatric cancer patients cannot be cured. Paediatric palliative care (PPC) aims to prevent and relieve suffering of children with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions and to support their families.

HOPE4Kids brings together partners across EU Member States and associated countries to strengthen and harmonise paediatric palliative care in Europe. The Joint Action includes landscape analysis, guideline development, pilot activities, education and training, and sustainability measures, focusing on six cross-cutting themes: symptom treatment, advance care planning, shared decision-making, psychosocial care, pre-loss and bereavement care, and models of care.

The expected outcome of the project:

  • Improved quality and availability of paediatric palliative care in Europe.
  • Harmonised guidelines and care models across Member States.
  • Strengthened education and training in PPC. Sustainable cross-country cooperation in paediatric oncology palliative care.
