The community of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) now has an exciting new space for active leisure. A state-of-the-art outdoor sports complex has been inaugurated at Žeimenos g. 106.

The new facility is equipped for athletics, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and football. The stadium and courts include spectator stands, making it possible to host competitions. While the activities take place outdoors, modern changing rooms and showers are available inside for added convenience.

According to LSMU Rector Prof. Dr. Rimantas Benetis, the sports facilities development is provided for in the strategic plans of the University to promote active and healthy lifestyle among the academic community members.

“This will be a space for everyone to unwind after work, relax, and strengthen their health – a goal our University constantly pursues alongside its partners,” said Prof. Daiva Rastenytė, Chancellor of the LSMU Medical Academy.

The complex is designed to be open not only to the University community but also to residents of the city and surrounding areas, adhering to the respective conditions.

Kaunas City Deputy Mayor Mantas Jurgutis shared his enthusiasm during the opening ceremony: “It’s heartening to see that LSMU not only trains outstanding, dedicated, professional healthcare specialists but also promotes their psychological and physical well-being.”

Kaunas City Administration Director Tadas Metelionis echoed these sentiments: “We’re very happy that this sports facility has been established here – so close to Kaunas residents and the Eiguliai neighbourhood. Despite our efforts to create more sports grounds, demand remains high as locals want to exercise closer to home. It’s great to see the University and the city working hand in hand to build a healthier, more active Kaunas.”

The modern outdoor sports space aims to foster a physically active society. It was developed in partnership with the Kaunas Regional Parkinson’s Disease Society and the Kaunas Region Disabled Persons’ Integration and Sports Club “Santaka”.

“Health begins with movement. The Sports Centre site is an excellent facility, catering to both athletes and individuals with mobility challenges. We hope the new facility will contribute to the fostering of an active community and further expansions of the Sports Centre,” said Mindaugas Špokas, Director of the National Sports Agency.

Dr. Deivydas Velička, Head of the LSMU Sports Centre, highlighted the unique nature of this new facility: “This is currently the only outdoor complex of its kind at the University.”

“The complex is essential for conducting outdoor activities,” he remarked.

Sport and movement have long-standing traditions at the University. This year, the community has been introduced to new fitness opportunities, including combat sports, cardio dance workouts, and health-strengthening sessions. Recently, a modern gym was also opened at the student dormitory at Dainavos g. 3.

Further details about accessing the sports facilities will be announced soon.
