LSMU Associate Professor Dr. R. Zykus Co-Authors Prestigious Scientific Publication and New AI Tool
Dr. Romanas Zykus, Associate Professor at the LSMU Department of Gastroenterology, is a co-author of a prestigious scientific publication.
An international team of researchers, including a scientist from the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU), has published its work in the Journal of Hepatology, a leading journal with an impact factor of 40.1.
The researchers have developed a new artificial intelligence tool — ELM Score — that enables the non-invasive prediction of clinically significant portal hypertension in patients with compensated chronic liver disease.
The tool:
- Combines liver and spleen stiffness measurements (using any elastography technique) with simple clinical data.
- Reduces the proportion of inconclusive (“gray zone”) cases from nearly 48% (under the current Baveno VII criteria) to just 12%.
- Maintains high diagnostic accuracy.
- Enables earlier and safer identification of patients who require treatment.
- Helps reduce the need for invasive diagnostic procedures in patients with chronic liver disease.
