Department of Paediatric Surgery

About

The Department performs all necessary paediatric surgical procedures, orthopaedic and trauma surgery, and burns surgery.
The Department is also the Lithuanian hub for chest wall deformity surgery. Since 2003, the surgeons at the Department have been the only ones in Lithuania to perform the minimally invasive Nuss surgery for pectus excavatum.
The Department’s paediatric surgeons pioneer (since 1996) and lead in video-endoscopic surgery in Lithuania, and are currently the only ones in Lithuania to perform “one-trocar laparoscopic surgery”. They also were the first ones in Lithuania to perform corrective surgery for urinary incontinence (since 1995) and DSD corrective surgery (since 1998) in Lithuania. Our paediatric orthopaedic surgeons are the pioneers and advocates of the Ponseti method for treating clubfoot in Lithuania. The paediatric orthopaedic and trauma specialists at our Department are leaders in arthroscopy and complex trauma treatment in Lithuania.

The Department’s annual patient turnover:

  • 4,500 inpatient patients,
  • 3,700 surgical procedures,
  • 28,000 outpatient visits.

The Paediatric Outpatient Unit has three specialised rooms working on weekdays:

  • Orthopaedics and Trauma

General Paediatric Surgery Sector

Artūras Kilda graduated from Kaunas Medical Academy in 1993. Upon completion of his residency, in 1996 he started working as a paediatric surgeon at Kaunas Klinikos. In 2003, he defended his PhD thesis “Factors affecting early postoperative results in children operated for pectus excavatum”. In 2008, he became an associate professor at the Department of Paediatric Surgery, and in 2009 he was appointed the Head of the Paediatric Urology Unit.
He is a paediatric surgeon of extensive expertise and performs around 400 surgeries annually. The surgeon specialises in paediatric urology, thoracic surgery, and paediatric oncology and endosurgery. He is one of the pioneers and developers of paediatric video-endosurgery in Lithuania.
He completed his traineeships in Salzburg, Leipzig, and Hamburg.

Sector of Purulent Infections in Paediatric Surgery

Dalius Malcius graduated from Kaunas Medical Academy in 1990 and has been working as a paediatric surgeon at Kaunas Klinikos since 1992.
In 2009, he defended his doctoral dissertation “Epidemiological and clinical studies of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis in children”. In 2009, he was appointed the Head of the Purulent Infection Paediatric Surgery Sector, and started working as a lecturer at the Department of Paediatric Surgery.
He is a paediatric surgeon of extensive expertise and performs around 300 surgeries annually. He specialises in paediatric purulent surgery, paediatric urology, and video-endosurgery. He is one of the pioneers and developers of paediatric video-endosurgery in Lithuania.
In 2007, he was awarded the European Paediatric Surgeon’s Certificate.
The surgeon completed traineeships in Hamburg, Stockholm, Salzburg, and Leipzig.
Social activities.
– Secretary of the Lithuanian Society of Paediatric Surgeons since 2003.
– Secretary of the Baltic Association of Paediatric Surgeons in 2000–2002 and 2006–2008.
– Member of the Information Committee of the European Association of Paediatric Surgery (EUPSA) in 2003–2008.

Paediatric Orthopaedics-Traumatology Unit

Emilis Čekanauskas graduated from Kaunas Medical Academy in 1989. From 1990 to 2000, he worked as a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon-traumatologist at Kaunas Red Cross Hospital. In 2000, he was assigned Head of the Paediatric Orthopaedics-Traumatology sector at Kaunas Klinikos. In 2009, he was appointed the administrative manager of the Department of Paediatric Surgery.
In 2010, he defended his doctoral dissertation “Evaluation of treatment methods of the children with displaced humeral supracondylar fracture”.
E. Čekanauskas is a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon-traumatologist with vast expertise and performs more than 300 surgeries annually, specialising in oncology, foot, elbow joint, and multiple trauma surgery.
He completed his traineeships in Tel Aviv, Stockholm, Vienna, Marseille, and Helsinki.
Social activities.
– Member of the Board of the Lithuanian Society of Paediatric Orthopaedics and Traumatology.

The course in Paediatric Surgery is taught to 5th year medical students (2 credits).
The Department also provides training to the paediatric surgery residents.
In the last 5 years, 5 teaching books have been published and 4 textbooks have been co-authored by the collaborators at the Department.

The Department is actively engaged in research activities and currently has 6 residents.
39 scientific articles have been published in the last 5 years: 19 publications referenced in the databases of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), 18 publications referenced in international databases in the list approved by the Research Council of Lithuania.
